Hi all The adventure has started and not without a few hiccups. Left my satchel at the restaurant we ate at prior to going to the airport. This contained passports, flight details, shuttle service and hotels booked. Luckily it was recovered and the journey began. Flights courtesy of Virgin were good as we were in Business. They supply you with PJ’s which are quite comfortable and saves you from coming off the plane looking like a crinkle cut potato chip. The food and service was excellent, probably the best airline food I have had. Even though we had lay flat beds both Gaynor and I had trouble sleeping, but 1st world problems aside we landed in LA at 7am and contacted our shuttle who duly delivered us to our Hotel in Fullerton. DId a drive up and down the Vegas Strip this morning much to the kids hilarity over the glamourous pictures of "dreamgirls" on the side of a promotional van. Then followed a 5 hour drive over countless arid mountain ridges and roadworks to a 200 shop Mall called Ontario Mills outside LA. The older kids enjoyed shopping for couple of hours before we arrived in Anaheim home of the original Disneyland which the same age as the present writer/ We did a reccy of the Disneyland box office and left $400 dollars lighter being the cost of one day's admission for the family tomorrow, Good Friday. Weather forecast is good so we can't complain. Evening finished with a tasty cheese pizza in the open air with real tomato sauce. Kids also managed an hour in the ... read more

Although now as I reflect on the plane ride back to LAX it seems like the days flew by… they really did not. It was the first time in my life I truly grasped, for an extended period of time, the ability to stay present in each moment. This is something I strive for in my everyday routine at home but with the busy schedule I have endured for many years ... read more

One day until departure and we are just about packed!!! We spent all morning today juggling clothes, sleeping bags, shoes, books, toiletries, food, and fun stuff between our packs. We decided on a traveler's backpack and a duffel bag each. The duffel bags are filled with shoes for the kids in Kenya and some food. Our flight departs LAX tomorrow at 4:10 pm. The first stop on our journey is in Amsterdam, where we will be taking a bike tour through the city before boarding our flight into Nairobi. We could not be more excited for our adventure. The idea for our trip came out of a Facebook conversation we shared last summer. After a summer where it seemed like the universe wouldn't allow us to hang out, we started planning the trip in September. Six ... read more
