Day 19
Traveled 313 miles today. Our day started out rather calm, but wait, it doesn't stay that way. From our motel in Henderson, NV we drove 19 miles to Hoover Dam and got there early to get a spot in the parking garage. Since we were carrying 3 gallons of gas in a can, we were not permitted to park in the garage. Where we were parked gave us our exercise since we had to walk about a half mile and do 84 steps ( I counted them ) both ways. The dam is so big, it amazes us how this could be built in the 30's. From there we headed to today's destination, Hesperia, Ca. About 11:00 am,WE MADE IT, To California. Not long after we got into a lightning storm, we had rain for a short time. We came upon cars backed up on the road, the road was flooded. Someone finally decided to cross the water and the rest of us followed. As we went across the water , it was deep and swift enough to carry us sideways across our lane. Then we came to
Hoover Dam
Traffic in Hoover Dam miles and miles of desert . We had neck scarves that are filled with beads that absorb water when soaked in water. But they only cooled for about 20 minutes before drying out. We then sprayed ourselves with water to keep cool. Got the advice from some people in Kanab about getting neck scarves and a spray bottle. After getting out of the desert and stopping at a gas station for ice, some people said they had passed us in Death Valley. We didn't realize when we were going through, that it was Death Valley in the Mojave Desert. They said their thermometer in the car read 115 degrees. No wonder we were HOT. About half way through Death Valley, the Old T started missing, pulled the coils one at a time & number 4 appeared to be the problem, changed coil, still missed. We limped along at 25 mph when I thought, if we fill the gas tank it would put more pressure to the carburetor. After filling the gas tank it ran good the next 80 miles. Finally got to our motel in Hesperia, CA. At 7:00 pm.

Oh, my....never go through standing water from those storms. Some of them can carry you away and it isn\'t worth it! Just wait it out. They will recede so crossing is much safer! Safe travels in congested CA!
