Well wonders will never cease...Crescent City is in the directory!!
The day started out well after a good nights sleep at the Quality Inn,Ukiah.Breakfast was good and chatted to a couple from Pacifica near San Francisco who had immigated (some timeago by their accent)from the Phillipines. Its always good to pass the time with locals as you get so many different views of this huge country.Must be the circles we mix in or places we stay but we always seem to meet Democrats and in fact can't remember the last Republican we spoke to.
We headed north on 101 with very light traffic.I tried the overdrive again which I have found is great while the drive is flat but it gets a bit unerving when you travel uphill and the car never loses speed. There is always the feeling of wanting to either hit the brake or depress the accelerator for some strange reason.I cut the overdrive when we entered hilly country because I enjoy the challenge to drive the car.
We reached Leggat and paid $5 to drive thru the redwood tree with a hole cut out big enough to drive your car thru.
We stooped for lunch in the redwoods and marvelled at the height and density of the magnificent trees and the Avenue of Giants.Home made lunch of turkey, cheese, tomato and pickle squeezed from a tube....only in the USA !!
Dropped into Fortuna to look over a railroad station that was worth a look and after travelling up the main street found the attraction in a park.Gretchen headed over to where horse noises were oming from and discovered barrel racing going on so stopped a while to see what it was all about. Some great prizes of saddles up for grabs so there must have been a good sponsor or there is money in this sport.
Then it was on to Ferndale a quaint dairy town nearby with many Victorian buildings in the main street and homes. The Gingerbread House was fascinating and served also as a B&B..can't imagine what it cost to stay there but the travel book said be prepared to pay BIG dollars.
Time to fill up in Eureka at $4.35 a gallon although expected prices to rise as got further away from the bigger centres.
Decided to buy dinner from the mile long freezer at Safeway now that we are members with our own discount card that the shop assistant in Ukiah Safeway gave us.Good deal with 1lb of food in the Hungry Man dinner with Chocolate Brownie for desert.Shame it had defrosted by dinner time and the top of the Brownie had the Pork Rib BBQ sauce on it.After scoping the top the rest was all chocolate.
After Eureka it was on to more redwoods and a stroll thru them before stopping to take in and photograph a herd of elk on the roadside.
Made it to Crescent City and chose the Gardenia Motel for the night at a good rate from the Roomsaver book.No quibling by the front desk and we were in at the discounted price.Room ain't flash but its clean and relatively smell free. The fridge and microwave werent in the room as promised but after letting them know in the office the appliances turned up on dolly and connected up !!
Had a one hour walk to the main attraction at Battery Point Lighthouse in what was a galeforce wind.Strange as the sky was clear and plenty of sunshine.Think it mostly always blows here as it is exposed to the north and there are no trees that dont look like they have been battered by the wind.
The lighthouse was interesting and worth the walk. Not a lot else to offer in this small town but it was a convient place to stop as the day came to an end.
