From Cascais, Portugal to the Sacramento River with the Ziggurat Building in the background
We hosted another fine couple, Art and Kira at our home in Cool, California USA. They are from Portugals' west coast town of Cascais, just west of Lisboa on the Atlantic coast.

Art works as a graphic designer and part time movie maker with several short comic movie clips and one major film to his credit “Bad to the Bone” - a slapstick comedy about a wanna be rock & roll star and social misfit who goes around pushing small children off their bicycles and throwing his pet cat around after swinging the poor creature by the tail (animal lovers, please do not send me e-mail messages about cruelty to animals, stuffed toy cats and cinematic editing was used to create the scene. We also have a cat and we love animals).

Kira, who works for an import/export enterprise is a straight forward, no non-sense kind of gal who is frequently humourous and fun to be with. We initially met through the Couch Surfing Project, at www.CouchSurfing.org, one of two reciprocal hospitality clubs we are members of through the internet, the other being www.HospitalityClub.org.

After some months of back and forth e-mail communication, we found Art to be

On the Sacramento River, a big thumbs-up for the Delta King
sincere, funny, creative and of good character. Art asked to visit; Holly and I agreed to host; and we’re glad we did.

Kira is a kind and loving person who speaks French and Spanish as well. I got plenty of French practice - Merci beaucoup Madame Kira, Au revoir, A bientot, D'accord!

We took them around as much as we could. We visited Old Sacramento (had lunch at Joe's Famous Crab Shack), Folsom (had dinner at Chicago Fire Pizza, very tasty), Independence Trail, the Yuba River, Nevada City and Coloma - we were exhausted.

We enjoyed each others company for four days. They then took four days by themselves and made their way to San Francisco, Monterey and Carmel.

Art, thanks for saying hello to my old pal Clint in Carmel, he called to say you have potential as a movie director of slapstick comedies, possibly Monty Python style; you get the picture. Or, maybe Spaghetti Westerns, say "A Fistful of Euro's", "For a Few Euros More", or "The Good, the Bad and the Zany" ??

We all got together with Maria and David, Maria is from Brazil and speaks Portuguese. Maria was thrilled to

speak Portuguese with a native speaker and we all had a great time together.

Back from Carmel, we spent a final week-end together. Activities included a visit to Lake Tahoe where we stopped for a bite at the Hard Rock Café, and walked through Harvey’s Casino and enjoyed some free entertainment. From there we took a scenic drive around the East shore of Lake Tahoe - very pretty.

The real fun started when we got to Virginia City, Nevada. We took a spur of the moment, half baked script from our fertile and creative minds and the film "Wild Women of the Old West" action began. Art plays the role of Sheriff William “Red” Angus, Holly plays the role of Belle Starr, she was no “Belle” and no “Star”, Kira plays the role of Pearl Hart, she was no "Pearl" and had no “Heart”.

After an attempted bank robbery goes awry at the Old Virginny Bank, the two banditos Belle and Pearl make a hasty attempt to get out of Virginia City on horseback, but they don’t get far. Sheriff “Red” Angus always gets his man, in this case, two wild women. See production photo’s below to

Postscript: On departure day, we drove Art and Kira to the airport, but first we stopped for lunch at the Brewhouse. We said farewell and hope to see each other again. Hopefully next time in Cascais, Portugal.

Happy trails to you, until we meet again. Happy trails to you...

P.S., We are open to reciprocal hospitality exchanges - we host you; you host us. If you would like to host us; or be hosted by us, please contact us using the Contact Cool Travelers link just below.

Nice meeting you today
Hey Guys! GREAT pics and hilarious storytelling! It was nice meeting you both up in Placerville today. Did you pick up the list of items I recommended? Quick question Al... Do you take your pics in RAW (nef) format? My photo instructor told us to do so, but I cannot figure out how to convert them to a tif or jpeg so I cannot print or save to my online storage. I have spent 3 hours with the Photoshop for Dummies, but still can't figure it out.... hmmmmmmmmmmmm I am an intelligent critical care nurse but can't figure out this newfangled software :-( Any tips? Hope you have a splendid weekend. By for now~ Lori Mitchell RN, CCRN
