A Dose of Outside A Dose of Outside is intended to share a bit of nature with you as experienced on my local hikes and other adventures. Take a moment to look out the window or step outside and see what it is you see. What you smell. Notice what’s growing around you. Use all your senses and really get A Dose of Outside! HIKE DATE: 10-18-13, Matterhorn Peak, Sawtooth Ridge, Sierras We are pretty close to our planned departure time. We’re hitting the trail at approximately 6:15a.m. It’s cold and dark so we all have our headlamps on. My breath produced such a thick mist, it’s as if I am smoldering. Passing by the Mother’s Cookie car, we take a closer look. Wow. Seeing the raw destructive power of the bear up close is humbling. ... read more

I set the alarm for 5.30pm and we missed sunrise over the Mesquite Dunes, but to be honest the dunes weren’t that spectacular. It would’ve been better at sunset anyway which we missed because of spending way too much time in the shops! Next stop was Zabriske Point which was like a moon scape. Already at 6.30am it was getting hot. We passed through Furnace Creek which has the highest recorded temperature of 56 degrees Celsius on 15 July 1972. Yes we are here in summer as well. What were we thinking! It’s only parts of the valley that are below sea level that is stinking hot, the minute you rise above it, things cool down considerably to mere 35 degrees at night. Then we went to Bad Water, but I think the Devil’s Golf Course ... read more

On the road by 8.00am and we head towards Death Valley, it's a long drive to Virginia Creek and I am so not looking forward to this .Not long on the road and one of the towns we want to pass through is blocked off for a town parade and there is another detour after a bad accident on the freeway ahead, our GPS is giving us grief and she keeps telling us to re-route, its hot and I'm feeling anxious. We finally get back on the freeway to drive through Death Valley and we have a long hot drive ahead of us and I'm wondering why was so anxious as the road is well made and it's a smooth ride all the way. The temperature is hot, but not too bad as we stop at ... read more

July 20, 2010 We are not actually in Bridgeport, but beyond it in Coleville. We are camped in the middle of nowhere with mountains around and cattle mooing close by. The day at Yosemite was wonderful. Took lots of pictures. We went in the South Gate and out the East Gate. The drive on Tioga Road to get to the East Gate was awesome (about 56 miles of beauty). Yosemite is WOW and WOW and AWESOME. After leaving the park we took US Highway 395 North. The drive is spectacular. No pix as I maxed out my camera at the park. Beautiful mountain backdrops and cattle range in between. The West Walker River on one side. We have gotten to see some really beautiful California Countryside on this trip. CA is not all LA and San ... read more
