I arrived in Bodega Bay in a cool drizzle. Thankfully the next morning the clouds had cleared and the sky was blue again. The little town of Bodega is tiny; its claim to fame is that it was the location for Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.” Bodega (pronounced “Bodayga”) Bay is about 5 miles from Bodega. The inhabitants of the Bay are quick to let you know where they are from; some of them even have a car sticker with BB on it as if it’s a country of its own! Needless to say there is a lot of fishing, crabbing, as well as all kind of water sport activities ongoing. I spent a good hour watching some guys windsurfing and kite skiing (I think that’s what it’s called.) I left my beautiful sea view spot for ... read more

Now is what I call the perfect vacation day... we slept in until our bodies were ready to wake up, at least mine was. Our only desire was to do some exploring in the local area and take the girls to see the ocean. It was raining in the Windsor area but it seemed to be off and on and everyone knows it's always rainy at the coast. I fueled up at the gas station and asked a local where was the best place to take kids to the beach and pointed us in the direction of Bodega Bay. We wandered down the twisty little state highway 12 through Sebastapol until we ended up at the ocean in Bodega Bay. The sky was still scattered with clouds but the rain was holding out on this side ... read more

Sept. 4, Thursday: Cliff Cottage, Bodega Bay, CA. My aunt and uncle, Patsy and Ed McKeown, treated us to a wonderful overnight in SF (well, Piedmont, across the bay and in the middle of Oakland). Patsy is my mother’s remaining sister and therefore particularly dear to me. But both of these folks in their 80’s are sharp as tacks, Ed is particularly great with maps and made sure we had the right ones with us. Better yet, they will probably join us one of these days for a “day in the country”, or on the coast, as the case may be. I’m a lucky kid to have such a large and wonderful family, McK’s among them. So we’re here at last in our seaside aerie, and what a beautiful place to spend a couple of weeks. ... read more

6/27/2008 We stayed the night in Bodega Bay, a charming seaside town! In the morning we headed up the coast to Fort Bragg. The coast was very beautiful! Most of the beaches you couldn't even get to because they were lined by cliffs. The campground we stayed at was on the beach. It was foggy and cold but Sarah, my cousin, Clay and I still braved the ocean! It was freezing! but worth it. KATIE... read more

So we didn’t take off today. We’ve popped into the Sandpiper Restaurant for lunch and I just powered up the computer to write this entry; our plan was to continue walking to the Tides after lunch, another half-hour or so from here, to get online. And holy cow! There’s free wi-fi RIGHT HERE! We’re crapping our pants over this because we could have been using it all this time to check the weather, and it’s so much closer to the marina than the Tides. This morning we listened carefully to the weather reports (while I creaked away on the stair stepper) and decided that while the conditions aren’t ideal, we don’t gain anything by waiting another day or two. Winds are predicted to be in the 15-25-knot range at the high point (late afternoon), and ... read more

We’ve had no shortage of drama here in the marina, as you can see from Harry’s earlier note about the ding-a-ling in the dinghy. The wind level alone is enough to raise my blood pressure. We’re idle, and it’s hard for both of us to do nothing. Small things become a big deal: I baked chocolate chip cookies yesterday and we took a compatibility quiz in the Oprah magazine. (Needless to say, we’re compatible.) This morning the wind was still screaming through here, and also in my dreams all night. At one point, I woke drenched in sweat and terrified. I thought the boat was heaving and flopping all over, and didn’t get clear that this had been a dream until morning, when I asked Harry how he did with all the swell. We’re enjoying ... read more

Today the wind gauge reads a big fat 0.0. We couldn't believe it when we woke up and we could hear the buoy out in the harbor, for the first time. Up until now, the roar of the wind has drowned out its honk. The fishermen here at the dock are nonchalant about the calm winds, even as Harry and I start running through our minds all the things we need to do before we throw off the lines. "Oh, it'll kick back up this afternoon," they say. The forecast isn't looking good, either, with this gale expected for a few more days. Here's the bitter end: just beyond Bodega Bay, a short days' sail north, the winds are and have been utterly calm. 5-10 knots have been predicted along the Oregon coast for days. ... read more

Last night the winds howled through the marina and this morning the report on the marina office called for "Gail" winds today. So we're still here. We hiked around the bay from the marina into what might be town. A few shops here and there, mostly catering to divers and people who like salt water taffy (what is it with salt water taffy and beachside dives?). According to a nice guy walking his dog, this is where the movie "The Birds", an Alfred Hitchcock flick, was filmed about 50 years ago. It's the first thing he told us. We were standing on the hill that the star runs down with the birds chasing her. THEN, we saw that the star of that movie, Tippi Hedren, is actually coming here to visit, and it's a really ... read more

Called the Coast Guard again. It was Saturday evening and the gale was still blowing. We were tied up snug to our dock, riding it out, waiting for a weather window to open up so we could continue north. The masthead was reading gusts in the upper thirties with sustained winds in the high twenties. I was working my way through the NY Times crossword puzzle when I heard shouting. Lots of shouting. Mainly cursing and swearing and threats. Taking a break from 21 Across “ Rousseau Work” I went to the cockpit to see what the fuss was about. It didn’t take long to figure it out. A gentleman in a particularly inebriated state was attempting to row his dinghy to his derelict sailboat anchored in the bay. But he only had one oar. ... read more

n Damme SP to Bodega Bay to Calistoga Friday the 13th, 2006. One of the regions’s few towns is Port Arena. We climbed 147 steps to a view of sea and coastline which is treacherous. This lighthouse and the area around was obliterated by the 1906 earthquake. As we drive the coastal highway # 1 with it’s hairpin turns, and steep drops into the Pacific, I am not going to think about “Friday the 13th”. The coastal vistas are magnificent. The weather today is cloudy and cool, but it adds a different flavor to the coast. Bob is having a grand time with his camera. This road is amazing, but it is giving me “white knuckles”. An amusement ride at Kennywood is fun but driving off a cliff into the Pacific is not. We drove highways ... read more
