Hot Springs, Arkansas Due to a fairly rough night, despite my best efforts at waking the group up (a few mumbled repetitions of "Guys... guys we need to get up" before falling back to an uncomfortable slumber) we ended up setting out a couple of hours past the ideal departure time. No worries though, as a quick phone call to the night's venue, Maxine's, cleared everything up in a few minutes. Adam took the helm and drove for many hours while we kept our ears open for our bands to play on the radio. Hot Springs is a surprisingly bustling town considering its population of around 40,000 people. Its big claim to fame is being the boyhood home of former president Bill Clinton. This was exciting news, as perhaps this was an environment that fostered and ... read more

Monday morning in Perryville, Shelby made some delicious omelets for our breakfast. Barbara and I wanted to ride and explore the area, and Leta and Shelby just wanted to hang out at camp. Perryville is located about 50 miles north of Hot Springs with Quachita National Forest and many small side roads and lakes between here and there. Our first adventure was to Sylvia Lake. Started out on a gravel road with center and side lines to a gravel road with no lines to a dirt-rock road to a one lane dirt-rock road with small pull offs on the improbable chance of meeting some other idiot on this road. Later found that we crossed Wildcat Mountain by one of the locals. After crossing the mountain we continued to Hot Springs (home of Bill Clinton). The ... read more

On our first day of the road trip, Jerome and I took off from Fort Worth at around 2:30! I picked him up at the Greyhound station previously. We have a carfull, but we can still see out the back of the car! We drove for about five hours, with Jerome waxing philosophically, and then arrived at Hot Springs, Arkansas. By recommendation of Lana, we ate at Rocky's Corner for pizza and it was very delicious! We had a rough time finding it, as Jerome's Iphone directed us to a Spanish Nazarene church instead of the restaraunt. We then checked into Best Western and I hit the pool before bed. Tomorrow, we plan to go to Hot Springs NP for the morning and then hit the road again to make it to St. Louis in time ... read more

The drive to Hot Springs AR was convoluted by design -the road less traveled. We set out for Magnolia on US 278 and 371 via Rosston AR. Since we had seen much of Magnolia on Saturday, I pulled the Pilgrim onto the truck route around town and headed east on US 82 towards El Dorado - a town that had intrigued me since I first read about the historic downtown area. We were not disappointed. About two blocks from the historic courthouse, I found an open half block to parallel park the rig. The short walk past the well-preserved storefronts was delightful. Sculptures pay tribute to the oil heritage of the area. Sidewalk cafes blend the old with the new. Well-weathered advertisements on the sides of buildings reminisce of businesses long gone. Plaques mark the location ... read more

On my way to Texas I decide to make a little detour to Hot Springs, Arkansas. A little town, whose center wraps itself around 50 square miles of forest and hills that is Hot Springs National Forest. The name comes from the towns main attraction, the hot springs that have been used in the town's baths for over a hundred years. Back in the late 19th century the wealthy from all over the country would come here to relax in the hot waters. Why is the water so hot and healthy? It is rainwater that is absorbed into the rock and hence dissolves minerals as it percolates downward. The increasingly warmer rock heats up the water at a rate of about 4 degrees F every 300 feet. Hot Springs mountain is where the faults and joints ... read more

We've spend a whole day in Hot Springs today. In the afternoon we actually wanted to go to the lake, but then a thunderstorm came thru and it rained pretty much the remainder of the day. So what better to do in Hot Springs than go to the hot springs? We went to Quapaw Baths & Spa to bath in the thermal waters. Very relaxing. The water has between 95 and 104 degrees in different pools. After the visit we were kind of tired and also hungry. Since there's not a lot of food choices in Hot Springs, we decided for Mexican at Ronaldo's. Very good, although not as good as Senor Tequila (oh how I miss that). After dinner we drove around town and were amazed that a lot of big hotels were closed and ... read more

Monday, June 29 (Crater of Diamonds State Park): We left around 8am for the one hour or so drive to Crate of Diamonds State Park near Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Along the way and even more so when we entered Murfreesboro, both Manoli and I wondered about how little traffic there was on the road and how deserted Murfreesboro seemed. Could the Crater of Diamonds State Park be less popular for some reason than we’d expected, or are we still in this economy doldrum? Well, all that changed as we turned the last corner on the park road and spotted the parking lot. Still not even 9:30am and there were at least dozens of cars in the lot! The park also has a small water park which was already getting busy. After reading the signs and watching a ... read more

Sunday, June 28 (St. Louis West KOA to Hot Springs KOA): Well, another day of mostly travel. We left St. Louis a bit after 8am, stopped at a TA Travel Center for a very good lunch at their Country Pride Restaurant, then continued on to Hot Springs, Arkansas. This KOA is a bit different, in that it is laid out on a series of hills. Very nice though, with a big office/store, a pool, game room, two laundry rooms, and a separate mini golf area. After checking in, we decided to head into Hot Springs to find a good place to eat dinner. The road we entered town on was Grand Ave., straight from the KOA, and until we got near the center of town and Central Ave., it seemed like a ghost town. Granted, it ... read more

Happy 9th Birthday Trevor! In the morning we dug for diamonds. It was very hot outside! We didn’t find any diamonds, but lots of other rocks like Jasper, Mica, Calcite, and Quartz. When we were done, we drove to Hot Springs. We Went to the summit of the mountain there and we could see the whole city from up there! We saw the bathhouses from over 100 years ago and there were showers, tubs, and cooling rooms. There was one room with a huge stained glass window on the ceiling. We watched a movie about Hot Springs and learned a lot about it. Hot Springs used to be a wild west town! We also saw some of the spring and got to touch the water. It was 143 degrees! They had places around the city where ... read more

Sam and I got up early and headed over the Buckstaff Bath House. There, we each got a traditional bath package including a mineral bath, steam and massage. It was a unique experience for each of us - we both came out "glowing" in the words of the guys. It was a nice relaxing way to start of the day before our next long drive. We had decided to extend the drive on this day to almost 500 miles to get us all the way to Austin. Gabe has a client there who, in exchange for a bit of work, agreed to let us stay in their guest house. While we were on the road, we saw a lot of thunderstorms and rain in the distance. The sky made for great entertainment for the drive. I ... read more
