We had had a tip from a couple yesterday to go to the Madera Canyon area, especially because there was a feeder area. It was about 50 minutes away, and we discovered some interesting things and not just birds: there was strip-mining south of Tucson – huge squared off “tubs” of water – that was copper mining. AZ is evidently the source of most of the US’s copper. And then we wondered why US Rt 19 was marking everything in KILOMETERS instead of miles???? Because the road was built right after Congress approved a bill to switch over from miles to metrics, in like 1974. When it never really “caught on,” and we kept the funny old English system, the locals loved it and fought to keep the signs. Evidently there’s a stretch of road near ... read more

This little AirBnB in W. Tucson is lovely. The bed comfortable, the area so quiet and full of birds. We had our scrambled eggs on toast outside on the patio and listened to the funny little Gambel’s quail, who run around in the underbrush and hop up onto walls or cactuses with ease. They can’t sing without bobbing their little topknots. As they don’t adopt savings time in Arizona, it gets light very early. We had about a 15 min drive to Saguaro National Park West, and stopped at the Gates Pass viewpoint – you can see all the way to the wide open Sonoran Desert from there. We arrived before the Park opened at 9 and had a lovely walk outside the Visitor’s Center. Early really is the best time for the birds. Then we ... read more

We had a great final day in Mexico, ending it with one of the best meals I've ever had. We had dinner at the fishing port at Los MTZ, a family owned place with roots in Oaxaca...We had spotted sea bass, cooked on the grill, along with garlic shrimp and other delights... This morning, Bill and I went to the beach where I ran and swam in the tide pools. Walter fixed a greek omelet for us and we were on our way north again....I hated to leave Mexico, but we'll be back soon, hopefully. Puerto Penasco is known as "Arizona's beach" and the town fills up with Americans and some Mexicans every weekend. As we drove back towards the border, there was a steady stream of cars, RVs, trucks pulling dune buggies, and an occasional ... read more

Early start to the day, up and having first cup of coffee at 5:30. Kitty is fed and seems well rested and ready for the adventure to begin. I am very much out of practice of the blog post. With Covid our trips have been short and frankly often when recovering from an eye surgery. This is our first real vacation in 2 years. Hopefully, it is a trip back to normal travel again. We already have 3 trips planned for 2022. Since I am a bit rusty on my blogging routine and I was very tired last night, there are some things I failed to mention. First, this trip has been in the making for 3 years. It was first scheduled for Christmas 2018, but 3 weeks before that trip I broke my ankle and ... read more

Was a really nice weather day in Tucson, about 74 degrees this January day, and I took advantage and played nine holes at the url=https://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-information/golf-courses/details/tussp-jw-marriott-tucson-starr-pass-resort-and-spa/33581/Coyote 9 at the url=https://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-information/golf-courses/tussp-jw-marriott-tucson-starr-pass-resort-and-spa/Starr Pass Golf Club . I ended up not being paired with anyone as there were really no other groups playing that 9 in the afternoon as I was. As I was walking up the 8th fairway to find my ball for my third shot to the par 5, I discovered that there were not people working behind the green, but rather a group of Javelina or Collared Peccary, luxuriati... read more

SPIRITUALITY I’ll be boogered. The notion of spirituality has bedeviled me for pretty much all of my life. As a young child one of my greatest fears was being abducted by wild Indians, and later, but briefly, by Spanish Conquistadors who made me a slave. It was the influence, on my tender sensibilities, of TV westerns, and cowboy movies like The Searchers. One night, during my 15th year of life, I had a very vivid dream about being a mountain man chased by the Blackfeet across the wilds of Wyoming. During the chase I was forced to abandon my pack animals, what was left of my camp supplies, and two years of peltries I had been busily harvesting through perilous efforts. Some of the Blackfeet left the chase to gather in that bounty. As ... read more

We visited the Pima Air and Space Museum on Friday. It has an extensive collection of planes, housed both inside and out on the grounds. We had hoped to visit the giant Air Force "boneyard" facility, but you now need to get security clearance at least ten days before your visit. The Museum is one of the world's largest non-government funded aerospace museums. and features a display of nearly 300 aircraft spread out over 80 acres. "The concept for the Pima Air & Space Museum began in 1966 during the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the creation of the United States Air Force. Earlier the commanders of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center the forerunner to today’s 309th Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Group recognized that the historic World War ... read more

On Monday we moved into Tucson. We are staying at a friend's daughter's house until Sunday. Her home is in a quiet neighborhood built about 20 years ago, and is about a 10 minute bike ride from the Loop Trail. The Loop is a 131 mile multi use paved path that circles Tucson, and follows the river beds for much of its route. We borrowed bikes on Tuesday, and rode 10 miles north to the junction of the East and West paths. On Wednesday morning, we rode another 10 miles south. This route was more rural, but most of the time the trail is bordered by commercial and residential zones. Much of it is new, and beautifully paved...and flat! Wednesday afternoon we went to the east part of the Saguaro National Park, where we drove the ... read more
