A Premature Goodbye... After getting my car repaired in San Diego, I wrestled with the thought of staying one more night and going strait through to Flagstaff, AZ, but decided to go ahead to segment the drive and stay a night in Big Bear City. Big Bear Mistake, yo. Don't get me wrong, it was a pretty town in the mountains with that Bavarian feel I love....NOT! And, of course, being a Monday it was absolutely dead. Only three others stayed at the Hostel and I had a very low key evening chatting with the owner who seemed to be happy to have someone to talk to. So, ultimately I would have much rather spent another night hangin' with Jessica Jean, but I guess I had to cut loose from the West Coast at some ... read more

Well, I know that this is not about Camp A. But I thought you'd like to see some pictures of the schools I went to look at in Arizona, as well as a few others that we took while we were there. I went to look at 2 schools, one in Tempe and one in Tucson. Mom and I drove there - YUCK! But we made it there and back and had fun too! We went to this cool desert museum and that was really fun. As for the schools, I really liked them both. The one in Tempe is Collins College of Design and I know that I"ll be able to go in as a junior there... well 99% sure. The one in Tucson is The Art Center Design College, not quite sure if I'll ... read more

This will be my first ever entry in the realm of TravelBlog.com, and I feel that its best to do a prelude to our upcoming adventure to test the site. I have grown comfortable and quite fond of my livejournal page, but alas, it can no longer offer me the latest and most convenient quirks of blogging-- and by that I specifically mean the map! I am quite fond of this as a tool for my friends and family to really track me as we move across South East Asia, and then maybe even as we dive into our Peace Corps service in Eastern Europe (come March 08)... As for now, Chris and I are anxiously counting down the days until our lives as we know them-- that is, here in the Maple house in Tempe, ... read more

Well as of yesterday afternoon, I'm back in the good ol' US of A. Coming home was it's own adventure. I don't think I've ever stood in quite as many lines as I did in the Buenos Aires airport. Not only are there the normal check in, security, and passport control lines, you must also pay an airport tax before you leave. I've never heard of it working like that, usually this tax is included in the ticket price. Anyhow, I got to the airport three hours early. No one line was extremely long and yet I barely had time to buy a soda before I boarded the plane. But the real funny story happened in the Phoenix airport. Sham picked me up right outside of security. As we were waiting for my luggage, he ... read more

Well, I'll soon be on my way out of the desert. I bought a Greyhound ticket to LA and I'll be departing at 5:30 AM tomorrow morning. I will need all of you to cross your fingers and wish me well, as I'm going out on a limb and building cardboard boxes for my bike from boxes aquired at the local liquor store. I'll then have to disassemble the bike and get it into the boxes, meeting greyhound's requirements for size and weight. This process will begin tonight, and must be done by 4 AM or so-- Gabe is leaving for work around 5 and he's my only ride to the station. When I get to LA I should be staying with some friends of friends there for a couple days- I'll keep you posted. ... read more

Right now, I feel like a five year old on Christmas morning. I know you ALL have been there- you wake up at 5:30 AM and run upstairs to see if Santa has come (well, I never "ran" because I was afraid of Santa, but the feeling of excitement was still there). Then, you run and jump on your parents three minutes later to inform them that yes, Santa HAS arrived and he brought PRESENTS!!! Everyday this week feels like the longest day of my life. I just want to be in London already! And like a small child on Christmas morning, I feel the need to tell everyone I come in contact with that I am leaving for Europe in four days. Sometimes, if I'm feeling witty, I will calculate the exact number of hours, ... read more

Being the organized and prepared person I am, it is 1:37am on Thursday, May 17, the day I leave for New Jersey and eventually to Europe, and I am still packing my bags. The concept of "backpacking" didn't really hit me till I attempted to cram 10 shirts, 5 pairs of shorts, a pair of jeans, 12 pairs of boxers and socks into the backpack I had purchased to carry around on my back all across Europe. I got the shirts and a pair of shorts in before I had no room left. I suddenly realized that "backpacking" meant wearing the same 2 shirts, the same shorts everyday, and rotating underwear and socks every 3 days. In about 2 weeks, I will be a smelly, stained man roaming the streets of Venice. I won't really ... read more

scenic route to the heart of the GCMatt Edwards Tues, May 15 Well, it's been six long days since I last found my way to a computer to update this little broken stream of consciousness. I've been kind of busy for the last few days and now without reliable transportation, so hopefully (crosses fingers) I'll be doing this more often when I get my bike on the road and things smooth out a bit. Just a little more work to do-- gotta mount my brakes and racks and either cut up my fenders so they'll fit, or get rid of them at some bike shop and maybe try to find some others. Then I'll be mailing a few unpackable things (thanks for the beautiful book, Grandma) back home to narrow down my things into a few ... read more
