Four Corners & Monument Valley

I was quite excited about this next destination as we were heading further into the desert! On the way we stopped at 4 Corners USA. This is the only place in the US where 4 states meet. The land is on an Indian Reservation and they have set it up as a tourist spot. It was quite an interesting place, the actual point where the 4 states meet had a concrete monument where we had our photos taken. All around the square monument are rickety old stalls where the American Indians sell jewelry, pottery, arrows and other bits and bobs. They also had a couple of food stalls selling Indian frybread, which as the name suggests is a bread-like dough which has been fried. Eager to try a bit of culture (and because they smelled soooo good) we ordered them for lunch. I had apricot jam on mine - yum! We sat on a picnic table under a wooden pagoda, and we looked out at…. Nothing! Seriously! I suddenly realized that this little tourist spot was right smack band in the middle of nowhere with nothing but desert wasteland as far as the eye could

see! Funny little spot, not a lot of class but you have to go just so that you can play twister with one limb in each state and eat frybread!

We drove on to Monument Valley (still in the Indian Reservation) about another 2 hours away. It has great big rock formations however when we got there we decided it didn’t warrant a closer look. You know you have been spoilt when you get to a place like Monument Valley and think 'naw, I’ve seen better'. Anyway we decided to set up camp and stay the night as it was already 4pm and the closest city was at least 2 hours away and we were glad we did! We found a little campsite and we set up on a hill with the most magnificent view! The campsite even had a pool for which we were truly grateful. We had a swim and chatted to a family from Northern California.

The next days drive took us to Tuba City (still part of the ‘Navaho Nation’, Indian Reservation) It was a nothing little town and the parts of the Indian Reservation we saw were so poor. They obviously have a

fairly high incidence of Diabetes as we passed a huge billboard reminding Diabetics to regularly test their blood sugars! As there was little to see or do there we did our grocery shopping and tucked ourself away in our trailer with a DVD.
