Today started with a re-trace of our route into Bryce. That's part of the fun of this trip, a good bit of it is spent getting from one cool place to the next and often you have to backtrack your previous day's drive. But the scenery is enjoyable, so it's okay. Drove to Zion Canyon. Entry into the canyon is a bit hair-raising. First you go through a tunnel built in the 1930's. And since it was built when cars were smaller, so now they only let a bunch of vehicles in at a time in one direction. The tunnel has these huge "windows" in it, designed for ventilation purposes and they give you your first great view of the canyon. Once through the tunnel, you go down this wonderful switchback road. It's so new that ... read more

Most of our time in Lake Powell / Glen Canyon was spent having fun either by the pool or on the lake. We hired a speedboat for a few hours. Given that the lake is about 185 miles long, we didn’t get very far along it. This wasn’t helped by the fact that we spent all our time having endless fun going up and down the lake, pulling an inflatable behind us with one child or another desperately trying to hang on to it. It was great for those like us with no boating experience as, after a safety briefing and overview of the boat controls, we were allowed to go our own way. Apparently all the boats had been booked solid for the rest of August, so we need to get there at 7.00am and ... read more

From the Grand Canyon we had to make a detour to Flagstaff to drop off Duncan at the airport. Flagstaff's airport isn't the worlds largest airport and on the way in I only saw planes with propellers. After making sure we had the right airport on the right day we said our farewells to Duncan and wished him well on his marathon trip back to Durban whilst we headed off to Monument Valley. Monument Valley is situated on a Navajo Reservation and the closer you get the more you feel like you are in the middle of an old western movie. The landscape is both scenic and barren at the same time. A load of westerns have been filmed out in this part of the world and it is easy to see why. Seeing Monument Valley ... read more

ANTELOPE SLOT CANYONS In 2007 my wife and I went to Kanab, Utah to try to get a permit for "The Wave" through their onsite lottery system. We camped the day before and got to the Ranger station before it opened. There, close to 100 people from all over the world stood in line. They only gave out 10 permits and 4 went to a group from Norway and 6 went to a group from Germany. Having driven all the way from Las Vegas, we felt that we should lift our heads up and enjoy what was around. After a couple of hours of reading tourist infos, we discovered so many things to see there. One of them, was the Antelope slot canyons. I have seen pictures of this famous place, but I did not realize ... read more

Ken got up earlier than me—he has an 8 am appointment to get the truck checked out, make sure it is OK. When you pulling 6000 lbs behind you, you don’t want to break down. I got up around 7:30 and now I’m sitting outside drinking my latte. It’s 87 degrees already, but I’m in shade so it is comfortable. The view of the lake is so pretty. There are a few boats on it already. I can’t help thinking about how Jason and his family were supposed to be here with us at Lake Powell. They would have loved it. April had to work so they couldn’t come. There actually is a nice cool breeze here in the shade. I know it won’t stay this way. ... read more

I blogged for a while until Ken called. The truck is fine; it was just the fuel filter. Must have picked up some bad gas. While he was waiting, he met an ole’ guy named Gary. He was having work done on his vehicle. He started talking to Ken (or more likely vice versa); He owns 16 acres near the North Rim and is trying to sell it. His wife died 6 months ago and he is so, so lonely. He has family back in California. He is going to move there; although he hates California; but his loneliness is more than he can bear. How sad. Ken asks him if would like to go get some lunch while they wait. He said he would be glad to take him~~he packed his lunch. He takes Ken ... read more
