blog 10-25-17 The Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park
Some research was done last night about visiting the park and it was decided we needed to leave early to get the best sun on the Painted Desert. So we were on the road by 10 am and in the park by 10:20. We got our Passport book stamped and headed out to see the sights. After seeing the sights we have in the last few months, the Painted Desert was a little lace luster, still pretty but really small. Once you've been to the best.....
There was a section that was truly beautiful that was called Blue Mesa in the Petrified Forest section. The "Badland" formations were blue, gray, purple and white. They were truly amazing and there were petrified logs mixed in of various colors including red, rust, yellow, white, blue and green. Pictures.
We went to several stops along the 28 mile road and my favorite was the Indian Ruins and the petroglyphs , one such stop was called "Newspaper Rock". That made me wonder if the Petroglyphs were actually early graffeete. They told stories and were messages to others and decoration, so the
artists thought.
A 1932 Studebaker stands where Rt 66 used to run through the park and is there as a memorial the the famed road. Everything around here is Rt 66 memorabelia, hats, shirts, signs, key chains, you name it they sell it, along with petrified wood everything. But don't take any from the park, heavy fines and there is a legend about having bad luck from the day you take something to the day you return it.
You will notice pictures of Ginnie talking to a raven several times. He followed us through the whole park and stopped to talk 4 times.
By the time we got to the end of the park road we were more than ready to get home, but first we had to find a post office and ice cream. The information center was in the old Navajo County Courthouse which was built in 1869 complete with two logs of petrified wood that stood by the sidewalk. Pictures
We got home about 3 and sat outside with the dogs for a while til they talked us into giving them a walk. Ginnie took her kids to the dog park and Watson
and I walked along then we sat in chairs while the 2 big guys ran around. Watson is healing very well but running in soft sand with 2 big dogs is not a good idea. He wanted to join in so I took him out of the dog park and for a walk down the road. By the time we got home Alfy, Linus and Ginnie were coming back too. We all had a nice restful afternoon and sat and watched the sunset from the camper because it was getting cold outside.
The temperatures have been cold at night, low of 27 but then warming up nicely in the afternoon to a high of 75, really perfect.
Tomorrow we head out for Santa Fe which will be a longer ride then we are used to lately.
