Today was dry. Yeah. We said good morning to a passel of 10 Gambrel Quail in our garden, and then we were off to Patagonia, a community very near the border with Mexico, along the Sonoita Creek. Paton’s Hummingbird Center is there, and that was our first stop. BTW, Tucson is about 2300’ elevation, Patagonia is 4000 (and Madera Canyon about 5000 the other day). Elevation really affects the varieties. Actually there are only 2 types of hummers here now, the tiny broadbill and the violet-crowned Hummingbiards. Staff had taken down all the seed feeders (!) because of increasing avian flu, but there were still birds in the pecan trees and shrubs. We learned about the symbiotic relationship between the Gila woodpeckers and Ladder-backed woodpeckers with the pine siskins. The woodpeckers broke open the pecan pods, ... read more

A POOR SWIMMER When the Gadsden Purchase was negotiated between the United States and Mexico it opened up new territory for settlement, but the Mexican’s conveniently forgot to mention anything about the Apache menace. The danger posed by hostile Apaches was also played down by men like Sylvester Mowry and Charles Posten who were loudly hawking our salubrious climate and mineral wealth hoping to speed up the process of settlement. Posten and his associates went so far as to start up a newspaper in Tubac that first went to press on March 3, 1859 as the Weekly Arizonian. It would have gladdened their hearts immensely later that year when a passel of greenhorns from Massachusetts turned up in the Santa Cruz Valley looking for land and opportunity. In order to capitalize on their fresh ... read more

Greetings from Green Valley! Vandaag verhuisd van mijn lonely mountain in Elgin naar the Inn at San Ignacio in Green Valley. I just sound like Moses?) :-) Morgen starten we bij Linda, erg veel zin in! Voor nu alleen even een foto-update, ook met foto's die bij eerdere verslagen horen.... read more

Day 143 Many of our adventures since leaving the condo have had to do with weather - wind, rain and snow. We arrived in Catalina Mountain State Park on the 18th. This is one of our most favorite parks, the views are wonderful and the hikes in the mountains are a challenge for us. This is also the park that we got stranded in 2 years ago when the only road in was covered in mud and sand when the snow melted in the mountains and the wash over the road ran like a river. Would history repeat itself?? Of course!!!! We left the nice cozy condo on the hill to park our camper at the base of Santa Catalina Mountains when the worst storm in many years was about to hit the Tucson area. ... read more

On our last morning, we had one more stop planned. We headed over to the Titan Missile Museum right in Green Valley. This is the last missile silo still in existance (minus the warhead of course) and when it was decommissioned, it was turned into a museum. It was interesting to learn that the glass lid over the missile was more the let the Soviets verify that it was still in place than to protect it from visitors. We went on the guided tour down into the control room and into the actual silo. Samantha got to play the part of the captain, turning the key in a simulated launch. The old technology was fascinating and the checklist of things the crew had to do every shift to ensure that nothing was off was enormous. It ... read more

The kitties........I do not think that they slept all night but they were pretty quiet for the most part. At first they were crying and scratching at the door, but then settled down. I had to use the facilities and every time I went in, they were ready to escape. We at least got some sleep w/o out the kitty gymnastics!!!! I let them out about 6 am and they were very happy. As we were getting ready to vacate the room, we noticed that Misty was really crying a lot. Then we realized that Jazzy was NOT around. I got out the "treats" which always brings Jazzy out! Nothing. All we could imagine is that she slipped out while we were putting things in the truck. Usually if the girls slip out, they never go ... read more

Our AM hike today was to the other, Saguaro NP (East). The northern edge of the Sonoran Desert is home to the most recognizable cactus in the world, the majestic saguaro cactus. We followed the Cactus Forest Loop Drive, then stopped for our hike along the Squeeze Pen Trail to the Pink Hill and returned on the Loma Verde Trail. It was a delightful walk in the desert among the saguaros. A visit to our friends, Jim and Joan in Green Valley, AZ, provided us with a wonderful opportunity to see and enjoy this beautiful area. After a Spanish lesson at the community college, we biked all around Green Valley. The roads are mainly flat and very biker-friendly; we even had our own biking lane. On Saturday we were off to Madera Canyon for a hike. ... read more
