Shoot Out
David, Patty and Karen with one of the Coldwater Creek Gang after the shhotout. After a yummy French toast breakfast we headed to the train depot for our ride to the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon Railway Resort is FABULOUS and I highly recommend it to anyone planning to visit. It has a hotel, pet kennel, the best RV park I’ve ever seen and five star service.
At the train depot we were treated to a shootout by the Coldwater Creek gang. During the show the audience was asked if anyone had birthday’s, anniversaries etc. Despite threats of death, Patty told them about our recent anniversary whereupon one of the gang presented Karen with a special gift - a “horse apple” straight from the freshly swept pile! Thanks a LOT Patty!
We boarded the train, a 1920’s Pullman car in coach class, for the 2 hour trip to the rim. There wasn’t much to see on the mostly barren stretch of land between Williams and the rim but we were treated to a musical show and beverages along the way. Arriving at the depot at the rim village we made our way quickly to Bright Angel Point. This is where the Bright Angel Fault intersects te canyon running all the way across the
Dead
One of the Coldwater Creek Gang met his demise in the shootout. 10 mile gap and for many miles beyond in both north and south directions.
The skies were gray as an electrical storm approached so we quickly took photos and grabbed some lunch. Signs all around warn not to feed the wildlife, but they don’t warn you that the wildlife might help themselves! Karen put down the container holding the hotdogs, drinks and condiments when, out of nowhere, a squirrel appeared, snatched a relish packet and disappeared before Karen could open her mouth!
By now the menacing storm was upon us. Karen and David took shelter in the lodge while Patty and Bill made a dash for the observation point. There Patty was able to take in the awesome wonder of the Grand Canyon. From Hopi Point you can glimpse the Colorado River at the bottom and begin to appreciate how vast the canyon is. Patty was moved to tears as she saw with her own eyes why they say pictures of the canyon don’t do it justice.
We all met back at the depot for our return trip to Williams. David decided luxury seating sounded better than what we had in coach and asked for an upgrade
All Aboard!
Th four of us boarding the train on the Grand Canyon Railroad. on the return trip. Normally one pays for these things but my husband has a way. He had on his Promise Keeper’s shirt which prompted the manager to give us 1st row premium dome car seats….FREE! Luxury it was, with an appetizer buffet, drinks and complimentary champagne or sparkling cider, blankets and pillows! Because we changed cars we sat through the musician’s show again but David became his star attraction, having passed him several times in the aisle downstairs. The Coldwater Creek Gang made a final appearance as they held up and robbed our train near the trip’s end.
Laundry, dinner and showers and we were ready to call it a night. -Karen
