After a great, cool night’s sleep we had breakfast at our campsite. We were up early because we came back into Arizona and are now on Pacific Time. At 6:00 am here is actually 7:00 am for us. We caught an early shuttle bus to the west side of the canyon, which is the only way to see this side. Dave says they eventually want to make the Grand Canyon accessible only by shuttle bus. The system here is very good, the signage is good and the shuttles are easy to use.
We took the shuttle to the first stop, and then hiked the Canyon Rim Trail for the next 3 stops, about 1.5 miles. We saw great scenery of the canyon and the Colorado River. We took the shuttle once again between points and then did another 1.1 hike from Pima Point to the end of the route at Hermit’s Rest. We got a little too close to the rim at one point, a small misstep and we would have been over the edge. We then found the real rim trail a few feet up from where we were.
Hermit’s Rest had a cute little store with the
huge hearth. I liked it so much I took a picture of it. We caught a shuttle bus back to the Village and had lunch and bought ice for the cooler and headed south on Route 64/180 toward our next destination - Sedona.
On our way to Flagstaff, we saw a beautiful mountain view, a purple peak sticking out right in front of us with yellow flowers lining both sides of the road. Dave said it felt like we were in New England again with the evergreens. The route to Sedona was a scenic drive around a mountain road, Sedona is about 1000 feet lower than Flagstaff. We arrived in Sedona mid-afternoon. Dave remembered the time he spent here with his sister. Betty was a very spiritual person and Sedona is a very spiritual place. They have vortexes here, which are specific fields that emit energy upward from the earth. There are three types of energy in these vortexes, electrical, magnetic and electromagnetic. Sedona contains numerous vortexes.
We drove up to see the Chapel of the Holy Cross. I have heard it referred to as Chapel in the Hills. It is a lovely little church with a huge
cross as its front wall. Sedona is a beautiful, town with red rock everywhere. It was a great place to visit.
We were not able to find a campsite in Sedona, so we headed back up to Flagstaff and camped in a KOA. We wanted a private campsite, we needed to do laundry and take showers. At the campsite we met DJ Jones who had laid her motorcycle over and Dave went over to help her. He thought it was a guy and was so surprised to see this stunning 6 foot, slender black woman dressed in her black leathers pick up a motorcycle by herself. She has ridden her bike, Big Bertha in all 50 states. She has set a national record. She is publishing a book about her journey, 50 States of Consciousness and we can’t wait to read it. She is a motivational speaker and an awesome woman.
