Yes that's right, the project got changed. That wasn't the only surprise when the van arrived on Monday morning. Apparently it was too cold to camp out and so we discovered we would be heading back to Flagstaff every night, which meant i had seen the last of camping in America.
Day one: Someone at Cedar house slept in and so we didn't leave Flagstaff until 8, arriving at the Wupatki maintenance yard around 9 to be told there was no work there for us and that we would be working back at Sunset Crater. We got there and after some discussion and posing with a sign to find a good location for it, we were ready to start putting it in place. We were ten told the chosen spot had already been assigned for something else and so back to square one. The park guys chose another spot but this was in the middle of an area under construction so no signing until next week. This effectively doomed us to odd jobs for the rest of the project and the remainder of the day was spent tidying up the maintenance yard before heading home and eating there.
Day
two: usual wake up and pick up times for project and then off to the Sunset Crater visitors centre for a day of clearing out an old office. This involved taking everything out into the new office, removing things off the walls, filling in the holes and removing all the carpet. With a smaller than normal crew (10 in total) this took until 4 when it was time to go home.
Day three: A DIY day. We were fixing up the room next to the new office. This entailed removing the wooden dry wall, insulating the cavities and then putting in new dry wall. Before we could do this we had to remove everything and then cut the new sheets of dry wall to fit the walls. The work was actually really fun, despite being more D.I.Y than A.C.E.
Day four: last day with ACE! Got to the visitors centre to find it deserted so we had to just sit there and wait for someone to show up. When he did show, the only work for us was tidying up the bone yard. Talk about going out with a whimper not a bang. Having said this we did
Leaving breakfast
The lads all paying attention NOT all get time jack-hammering a concrete slab to death, AT 1pm we were done and made the journey home ready for the last ACE cleanup. This was everyone's last project (including the 2 supervisors) so it was a strange mood back in Flagstaff. No crew meal although i was reunited with the lads downstairs after 2 weeks. We celebrated with domino's pizza and ice cream.
Packing and giving in all my ACE stuff on Friday which made it all very real that i was leaving the following morning. Luckily the boys had agreed to goto a diner for a farewell breakfast meal Saturday morning. After this we headed over to Cisco house for star wars and goodbyes before i went for the shuttle to Phoenix, along with 2 other ACEers.
