blog 03-10-20 Casa Grande Ruins

The weather continues to be a factor in my decision making for activities each day and when to do it. The morning today was beautiful with sun and blue skies with temps in the low 70s.

I took some pictures around the campground and the birds were active so I could get some shots of them. Everything looks different in the sun so I was happy to get some sun shots. Pictures

Rain was predicted for the afternoon so I walked Watson because I was leaving him home. He had a crowd around him again because of all the kids in the park. This week is spring break for most of AZ schools so everyone is out and about and enjoying the warm weather and beautiful scenery.

I left the campground about 10 am and headed to Casa Grande Ruins National Monument in Coolidge, about 35 northwest from here. It was an easy drive, except a construction vehicle threw a stone and badly chipped my windshield. Darn...

The ruins were down a long driveway but could be spotted from the road. In 1937 the powers that be built a roof over the ruins because of the deterioration that had taken place. The structure was built over 700 yrs ago and surprisingly has lasted this long. The people that built and inhabited the area were unknown but have been referred to as the Ancestral People by the Indians that lived here later.

The structure is 4 stories high and 60 ft. long and may have been used as a ceremonial center. There were several out buildings measuring 7 ft tall and a wall surrounding the whole compound. They built an irrigation system to water their crops with extensive canals from 2 rivers. They also traded with many villages as far a California.

There is a pair of horned owls that have a nest at the top of the ruins and 2 volunteers had a spotting scope on the female on the nest and they also showed where the male was watching from. Picture

I got home in time to walk Watson again, talk to my neighbor, then write the blog from yesterday and hit the sack.
