On February 27th, I talked about the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod in Anchorage, and on March 3, I talked about the Official Restartof the Iditarod in Willow, but I have more to say! (Big surprise, I know.) We had so many random experiences and had so much fun, even though (as I mentioned), it was the coldest I’d ever been in my entire life!! Technically, the temperature at the hotel said -10° Celsius (14° Fahrenheit), which doesn’t sound that cold, but it was like the frozen ocean air and the frozen glacier air came swirling down and wrapped itself around me!! But, it’s not just not my imagination – it actually froze my battery in my camera! (A local coffee shop let me recharge my batte... read more

As mentioned in the previous blog (Alaska in Summer), we impulsively decided to return to Alaska in winter – Yes, WINTER!!! But for good reason! To experience The Iditarod… as a spectator only, of course. I canNOT even imagine actually participating! This is a race, by dogsled, deemed “the toughest race on earth”, is over 1150 miles (1851 kms) over extreme terrain, across mountain ranges, over frozen rivers, through dense forests, across desolate tundra, and along windswept coastline. (The official distance is 1049 miles (1688 km) There are two trails – the North Trail (which has 26 checkoints) and the South Trail (which has 27 checkpoints). (In my previous blog, I said there were 22 checkpoints, but, I’m so... read more

Up very early today to catch our shuttle to the airport. We hopped on a plane and headed to Anchorage, but checked our luggage straight through to Colorado. We rented a car and then a little sightseeing in Anchorage before heading up to visit friends in Willow. We drove downtown and parked, then walked to a restaurant called the Snow City Cafe. It is listed as a local favorite in the AAA tour book, and now we can understand why. The place was packed and there was a short wait to get seated. We ordered our food and Deb declared it was the best omelet she had ever had. With bellies full, we then wandered through some of the shops, then walked over to the Performing Arts Center to see a movie called "Aurora: Alaska's Great ... read more

After a long January of mostly below zero degrees, I figured it was time to get out of the house and put my 0 degree bag to the test. Since I have been up here I have raved about wanting to do a backcournty ski trip longer than just a few miles. Sherry and I had a long weekend and decided it was time to make this happen. We rented us a public use cabin out in the Nancy Lake area, just south of Willow, AK. By the time we made the reservation there was only one cabin available: Red Shirt Lake Cabin #4. Being only 3 miles from the campground, I thought this would be a good little introduction for Sherry to winter backpacking and cross country skiing. We invited a few friends along, but ... read more

What can be said about our second day in Wild Alaska? At the Start, Danielle proceeded to get up at around 4:30 am as a victim of jetlag and write her journal for the first day of travel. I woke up at around 5:00 am for the same reason. I eventually emerged at 6:00 am acknowledging my inability to get any more sleep. At 6:00 we gathered our things and proceeded to breakfast at the concierge’s lounge as we did the day before. This time, we go there during operating hours so we could get our full allotment. After gathering our stuff in to the rented truck (2011 Chevy Silverado nicknamed Silver); we then embarked on our trip to Willow to the Dream a Dream Sled Dog Bed and Breakfast. It was a beautiful morning as ... read more

In early June I had the opportunity to do a several day canoe trip with a few guys from an adventure group that I am a part of. No worries, it is nothing like last years death trek, in fact this trip was quit relaxing. We set in at Tanaina Lake right off of the Nancy Lake Parkway about an hour north of Wasilla. We backpacked in with our gear and canoes and set off. As for wild life we saw plenty of loons, eagles and of course the state birds were out (misquotes). Mark, Ted and Ryan were great canoeing buddies. It was very peaceful venturing out with people I had never met before. In a sense it was as peaceful as going alone. There were no distractions of outside responsibilities and dwelling on past ... read more
