Broken ice in the water.
Monday we went on a Glacier Cruise out of a tiny town called Whittier. The cruise was a perfect ending to my portion of the trip to Alaska. We were blessed with sunny skies and two inch waves. The cruise members kept telling us how lucky we were to have such a gorgeous day. It is a rare event. Usually there is rain, wind and cold that goes along with the cruise. But not this day. You couldn’t have painted a prettier day!

So we set out into the Prince William Sound with the hopes of seeing some wildlife and some glaciers calving (breaking off) into the water. We were lucky enough to see some goats on a high cliff, a bear that wanted one of the goats, some seabirds, some otters, and some harbor seals. No whales on this trip. At the glaciers, we were impressed at how cold it got and how much wind was coming off the glacier. The ice that has fallen into the water makes a popping sound. The ranger on board said it was the loudest popping he had ever heard. The captain said we were about 1/4 of a mile away from

the glacier. We were also lucky enough to see a little calving of the glaciers. The ranger told us one time that what we saw was about the size of a one car garage falling into the water. The cracking sound it made when falling was awesome! The only time we were told to hold onto the rail due to the waves was when the ice fell into the water and headed towards our boat. It was soooo cool!

I also should mention that on the way out to the glacier and as we were observing the wildlife through the windows, we enjoyed a buffet of prime rib and salmon. On the way back in we had dessert.

Like I said, it was the perfect ending to my trip to Alaska with my parents. The whole trip was just wonderful and we all had a great time.

Mom and Dad will continue on with fishing and more sight seeing in Alaska. We hope to see more pictures on the blog soon of the big ones that don’t get away!

Thanks Mom and Dad!
Love, Ardith and family
