Woke up this morning to overcast skies and 40 degrees, but thankfully no rain. Drove into the Park. The boys went on a trail hike and the girls went to the visitor center and shopped at the bookstore. We did see our first moose yesterday in the park. By the time we left, the sun had come out and it was much more pleasant. Denali National Park covers 6 million acres (larger than the state of New Hampshire). Two million of those acres are designated wilderness. Dinner last night was at Salmon Bake Restaurant--it was a hoot--not a level floor in the place--Peggy had a hard time keeping Dave from sliding into her (see pic). Excellent breakfast this morning at the beautiful King Salmon Restaurant, part of the Denali Princess Hotel. The rainbow RV park leaves ... read more

Day: 17/18/19/20 Distance: 6580 Hi everyone! I dropped off the grid there for awhile didn't I? I actually had a blog ready to go on the 18th, but I couldn't get the map or the pictures loaded so I decided to wait until I found a better spot. I didn't. I'm now in Wasilla at a FredMyers superstore and let me tell you, they have the best darn Internet of all the places I have gone to. I'm amazed at how fast it is. Anywho, I'm guessing this blog will be extra large; maybe not since I didn't really do much yesterday. More on that later. A warning, my verb tenses may be mixed up since this is two blogs joined together. I'll try to catch any inconsistencies. So I woke up Tuesday (in a Fairbank's ... read more

Today was the longest drive of the entire trip, as we made our way from Fairbanks to Wasilla. To break the trip up, we stopped at various points along the way, including the Alaska Veterans' Memorial was a really beautiful place where I'm sure many found peace and tranquility. Today also saw a repeat visit to Talkeetna, as our first time there had been rather rushed. The weather was completely different to before, with high blue skies and bright sunshine. Coming back was a great idea, as not only did we get to see inside Nagley's General Store with its charming display of bear traps and animal skins, but we also came face to face with Talkeetna's mayor, the one and only Stubbs. We also took a look at some other of the locally owned shops ... read more

We left another sloppy mess at the over-priced Super 8 in Fairbanks as we packed up and headed South on the Parks Highway toward Anchorage. Before leaving Fairbanks We went to a pawn shop where I got a new helmet for only $25 and Dan got a new pair of boots. We headed to Denali National Park, but wanted to absorb a little Alaskan culture along the way. So, we stopped at Skinny Dick's Halfway Inn about 20 miles outside town. Skinny Dick's is a roadside pub, but with a very explicit flair. The decoration inside was the old signed dollar bill-loned ceiling, and sick-humored post cards & pictures to line the walls. The bar tender told us about Skinny and his daft humor. He had T-shirts that had his logo of two polar bears in ... read more

While Cathy was busy writing the blog, I was downloading pictures, hoping to post them here, but the computer here at this lodge blocks that, so I have to wait until Anchorage to post pictures. So now I have to tell our stories. Cathy is so much better at this but here goes. While Cathy and Neil were getting lots of exercise on their 4 mile hike, John and I chose to go flight seeing. We boarded a small Cessna 206 airplane, 5 passengers and the pilot, Bill. John got to be co-pilot. We all had to give our weight to which they automatically add 10, they probably are used to people lying! We sqweezed ourselves into this plane sitting shoulder to shoulder and knees to back. The takeoff on this short runway surrounded by mountains ... read more

We arrived yesterday about 4:00 pm. It was a 200 mile drive from Denali to Wasilla. It was Neil's turn to drive. He really doesn't stop for photo ops, so we will get there faster. We made it in 4hours , so that was pretty good. One stop for gas and a snack. All scenic, no towns really. It is more windy, so even though it is 50 degrees, it feels colder then up North where it was in the 30's. We popped over to the State Fair. Well... I just want to say that even though I am a chubba, We must look a lot younger then John and Trisha, because they got in for senior rate at $8.00' and we had to pay regular price at $13.00. I thought Trisha was going to pee ... read more

Took a trip to Exit Glacier of the Harding Ice Field just outside Seward. Little better than a 2 mile hike. Came back and had lunch. Saw 5 sea otter and a whale while just sitting in Seward before leaving. Headed back toward Anchorage, past Anchorage to Wasilla. Stopped at Wal-Mart for the night. Jack and Barbara arrived around midnight. Had great meal of onion smothered fried steak with pan-fried potatoes and garlic bread.... read more

We leave in 36 hours. It's too cold for us not to be excited... -30 F. We have a tentative plan here it is: Anchorage to Miami. We spend 24 hours in Miami before continuing on to Buenos Aires. Thursday August 16, 2007 We left Seward this morning with Wasilla as our destination. It was a cloudy day with a little rain. The trip north was pretty with mist shrouding the mountains and the clouds breaking every once in awhile and showing blue sky. We stopped at Portage Valley Visitor Center which is about 45 minutes from Anchorage. The valley has multiple glaciers. We saw several near the center. Alaska has a lot of glaciers! Closer to Anchorage there’s a wetlands area that attracts birds and we stopped to see if any birds were around. We didn’t see birds or ducks, but did see some salmon. They are beginning to die now, the term the locals use is “spawned out”. At Wasilla I shopped and Frank got a haircut. We have reservations for Denali on ... read more
