Sitka, formerly a Russian outpost, where Alaska was ceremoniously transferred to the United States after the purchase promoted by Secretary of State William Seward in 1867, was the one city we continuously heard was the most beautiful in Alaska. My family, who lived in Alaska for decades, said it shouldn’t be missed. A ferry employee was wistfully talking to a co-worker about how she was saving up to retire in Sitka. You often feel you’re going to be disappointed when expectations are set so high, but we fell in love with Sitka just like everyone else! The fact that we had perfectly clear, sunny days for nearly a week, unheard of in the Inside Passage, didn’t hurt. As one local stated, “It usually rains and it’s a good thing because if it didn’t, everyone would want ... read more

We again headed to the Lido for breakfast. I chose to eat fried eggs over medium with French toast; while, Sharon also had the French toast with very crispy turkey bacon. We did the daily Sudoku Challenge in the Explorer’s Lounge, and this time Sharon beat me on the Easy game (by quite a margin). It was a different story on the Hard puzzle where Sharon threw up her hands and earned a DNF. We had no tours planned for the second part of this two-week cruise. We waited some before going down to the tender and take the considerable journey ashore which takes over ten minutes. We only wanted to walk around Sitka. We considered walking out to the totem park; but, that looked to be a walk of a mile or so and the ... read more

After a slightly lazy start for the day, with Sharon and her mom not needing to rush off to mass in the morning or to catch an early tour, we made our way to the Lido. French toast seemed to be the preferred choice; but, I added some fried eggs over medium and sausage to that. There were no hash browns, but they did have cut-up breakfast spuds. Sharon was one step behind trying to get a chocolate croissant, other people seemed to have them, and many were leaving them half eaten or hardly touched and Sharon’s blood pressure was beginning to rise. She never did wrangle one of her favorite morning treats. We made our way to the Vista Lounge where HAL tours were assembling for their group tenders to the pier. For our tour, ... read more

Docked at Sitka around 9am but the two hours before as the ship sailed in were 'stunning'...get used to that word! There are hundreds of islands of all shapes and sizes as you approach, many of them like gigantic examples of 'bonsai' trees. Just a couple of rocks sticking out of the ocean with a couple of pines growing out of it at strange angles with the foliage springing out at bizarre angles as if manicured that way. Big excitement amongst the regular geriatric cruise brigade because a) this was the first time this year that the cruise ships had got into Sitka (or some of the lines anyway) and b) the dock at Sitka has been upgraded and this ship will be the first ever to actually dock there as opposed to drop anchor (nautical ... read more

Hello to all. I have finished all sites I wanted to see and some I didn't know I wanted to see until I returned here to Sitka after having been on the 8-day Alaskan Dream Glacier and Wildlife Cruise aboard the Admiralty Dream. The cruise was everything and more than what was expected. There were just over fifty of us plus the 20 person crew. Our time was filled daily with education, adventure, and extraordinary sites. The food was unbelievably good. I have so much to share when I get to doing these days individually. We visited a few villages and met the Tlingit people. In fact our cultural guide was Tlingit and filled with fascinating information and stories of the culture and people both historically and current. We also had a scientific guide who taught ... read more

Thursday 28/06/12 – We said our thanks and goodbyes to Chuck and hit the road, it was an early start as we had to travel 550 kms, and the weather forecast wasn’t too favourable for motorbike riding. The weatherman was right as it rained pretty heavily at times and the wind was funnelling through the mountains quite hard. We headed to Tok via the Alcan Highway and had planned to fuel up at a small town which had basically one petrol station, one house (attached to the petrol station), and one man who was the petrol station attendant. Despite the town including one petrol station and one petrol station attendant, it didn’t actually have any petrol – they had run out a few days ago. He informed us that we could get fuel either 60 miles ... read more

We had a morning arrival in Sitka, with rainy overcast skies, docking as we were having our breakfast. We turned in our RSVP for the Master Chef dinner this evening. John had the American breakfast, and HAL has proven that they know how to make eggs over medium, as they’ve been perfect every time they’ve been ordered. Sharon had her scrambled eggs and bacon, our short tour not being until after lunch. There are hints of blue in the far off skies, but they are also becoming increasingly gray. Though in point of fact, I don’t think we can complain about the weather on this cruise, it’s been pretty much perfect. We sat with a couple from Seattle, and a single lady and a single man. We had a relaxing morning, taking time to get a ... read more

Monday May 30, 2011 Memorial Day in Sitka, Alaska Bright sunny day. Set off walking toward the Raptor Rehabilitation Center. On the way, looked at the Sitka National Cemetery, which we thought appropriate for this day. Found the Raptor Center after a bit of an uphill walk. Extremely well run, clean and modern center for the care of all injured raptors, eagles, falcons, owls etc. They have many caged birds that are used for educational purposes as they can’t, for one reason or another, be returned to the wild. They had several birds in two inside flight runs that are being trained to return to the wild. The center takes in about 200 birds a year and returns about 40% to the wild. While we were watching outside, a wild eagle came and perched on a ... read more

Sunday May 29th, Sitka, Alaska At the Motel 8 kind of breakfast, I had a conversation with a man visiting his son and granddaughter that live year-round in Sitka. He was recounting a story about questioning his son who left his keys in the ignition of his car. His son said, “Dad there are only 13 miles of road in town and the only way to get off the island is by the ferry that comes a couple of times a week. Anyone stupid enough to steal the car would be met at the dock by the police”. He also said his wife addressed a package to “my son Ron, Sitka, Alaska” and received a phone call from the Sitka postmaster saying that she really needed to put his last name on the package even though ... read more

This weekend I will be taking my trip to Sitka with my Marine Mammalogy class. It should be amazing and I hope to come back with great stories and even more wonderful photos. It is promised to see whales, herring, sea lions, seals, as well as many other migrating marine life as the herring spawn begins. More to come soon... UPDATE! We arrived in Sitka late in the evening. Then we hit up the town for some mexican food all washed down with a few good glasses of beer. The following morning we arrived at 9am sharp over at the harbor and boarded the Allen Marine boat for a "food web cruise" which took us into the bay to search for marine mammals. The food wek ended up being a potluck breakfast- but there was a ... read more
