I spent the morning at the Fort Wainwright hospital having my RA infusion. At least this time it didn't take me 8 hours to get the job done like it did last month at Fort Lewis. Thank goodness.... Rest is on the agenda for the afternoon. Tonight we are having a big BBQ and celebration since it's Caroline's birthday. It's been raining on and off so we are hoping the evening will be clear. There is a forest fire in the Denali area so the highway to Denali is closed today. We are not traveling down that way until Monday, so please pray the fires are in control by then.... read more

This morning we took a trip to Santa's house. A great little village where we were able to see Christmas Alaska style. Joe and I even got to sit on Santa's lap. Outside we saw all of his Reindeer. They are shedding their winter coats so they look kind of funny. Next we headed up north to see the Alaskan Pipeline up close and personal. It's an amazing thing to see. We then headed downtown to look for something to eat. We found a place called Soapy Smith's Pioneer Restaurant. While we were eating lunch the owner, Dick, introduced us to a lady eskimo who was selling a Baleen. We were able look at it up close and touch it. She told us this season for hunting whales was very poor because the water levels were ... read more

The day started off with a quick trip to the military base for some labs and a food run to the commissary. Then we all took a look at a place called Pioneer Park. It was a mix of museums and old time buildings. The air museum had a nice dedication to Will Rogers who died in an airplane crash just north of Fairbanks. We all agreed it was somewhat interesting, but very glad it was free.... read more

Today's drive was quiet and peaceful compared to yesterday's drive. I actually did most of the during today so Joe could have a break. We saw a moose and a family of moose, but we were traveling too fast to get any good pictures of them. We stopped in Delta Junction and visited the monument that showed where the Alaskan Highway ends. All along the way we tried to get a good shot of Mt McKinley, but the clouds did not cooperate. We did make it to Fairbanks where there is so much to see and do. Actually we are 10 miles away from Fairbanks in North Pole, AK. We will sure be busy. We are going to an active gold mine and we are panning for gold so cross your fingers we get something big. ... read more

Last night we had pizza from the Great Alaska Pizza Co. at the picnic table in our RV park. Very Good. This morning went to church at St.Nicholas Church at North Pole. There are a lot of young families in the church. I imagine that they are with the Air Force Base here and the Army Post that is also here. We had a visiting priest from St. Louis to fill in for the local priest that was on vacation. The deacon said that this is the largest missionary diocese in the world. It has 48 parishes and 22 priests. Many of the churches are only accessible by boat, snowmobile or plane. This afternoon we went to Michael's. We had a fish fry (crappie that Carolyn brought from Florida). Lots of good food. We were suppossed ... read more

I couldn't get on the internet last night, so will try this morning. We went to Michael's house (Carroll and Barbara's son) yesterday. Carroll and Barbara are staying there while we are in this area. Barbara was in the process of canning salmon and rhubarb. She canned 19 pints of salmon and 18 pints of rhubarb. I am attaching a picture of Jim, Charlie, and Jerry trying to find gold. Carroll built this device made out of wood, plastic tubs, water pump and a piece of plastic drainage tubing cut in half. Carroll and Michael went to a creek bed and dug up several 5-gallon buckets of sand and gravel and brought them home. On the top of the device is a wood trough that has water pipes with water running. The sand and gravel is ... read more

8th July ’12 Fairbanks to North Pole to Tok Before leaving this morning I had a fascinating chat with the lady (age 70) who owns the Motel we have been staying in and her friend who was just visiting from Eagle – a small village right up near the Yukon River. They were saying ‘y’all should come back visit us in the winter and see how we really live’ which led me to ask them what it was really like and how did they manage. Turns out they do still get some daylight in Fairbanks in winter and the average temperature is -40 degrees, they then showed me the little lines dangling down from a wire across the length of the motel and told me that’s so people staying can plug their cars in so the ... read more

I am going to write this blog again. I had it all typed and lost the internet. I tried last night, but no internet then. Thursday night Scott, Carroll and Barbara's son, brought us huge cinnamon rolls that he had made. He is also the one that cooked our roasts for July 4th. Very good cook. Yesterday morning we got the rock chips filled in our windshield. A guy came to the park to do it. We had 3 rock chips and Charlie had one in his rv and one in his truck. Hopefully, we won't get anymore. We had another beautiful day yesterday. I went shopping with the ladies for quilt material and then we had lunch at a Japanese restaurant where they cook the food in front of you. Very entertaining and good food. ... read more

knitchick2: Hi, on Friday at camp was all about painting. We learn techniques from a local artist. We also played Ultimate frisbee. Where I was on the losing team and we had to walk back and forth on the long field in 80 degree heat. Let's just say we were all exhausted. That night mom and I went down to Chena Lakes to go to a Shabbat service with the Fairbank's Jewish congreation. It was a beatiful night.Everyone there was extremely kind. They had a female student rabbi lead services. She and her husband both had wonderful voices. As well as everyone. It was perfect weather, in the 70s with a nice breeze. The oneg had yummy fresh fruit, including my favorite. Pineapple!... read more

This a a layout of the path we will take through Canada on our journey from Alaska to Texas. We calculated that we can go a little less than 400 miles on a tank of gas in our motorhome. We decided to go through Edmonton and Regina in Canada and exit back into the U.S. through North Dakota, so as to avoid the Rocky Mountains. We have serious doubts that our rig could handle the stress of all the hills. We are eagerly awaiting the start of our journey and will continue to obsess over our travel plans until we get to go go go!:)... read more
