Thursday, June 18th 2009 This trip to Alaska was born at Red Rock Cafe in Mountain View, when I was talking to my friends K and S one evening not longer than 2 months ago. For the longest time I wanted to visit the northernmost United State and... here I am! I have a lot of hope in this trip and I know this is not going to disappoint me. The difference between this travelblog and all the past ones is that I'm writing this one live and right now, at 9.49pm, I am on an airplane to Anchorage. For the very first time in my life we were able to get a deal from the air company (Alaska airlines); we were supposed to fly to Seattle and then Anchorage and instead we got a direct ... read more

Greetings from Wetumpka, AL, which is just outside of Montgomery. I decided to take a day off to rest a pained knee, do some laundry, and relax. I neglected to take any photos at Phish or Bonnaroo and only a dozen or so on the road, but I attached a few anyhow. Bonnaroo was loads of fun, and it was nice to be surrounded by people, drink beer, and not ride a bike for a change. We managed to get my bike into the festival even though they aren't allowed because the police gave us a full search (looking for drugs and unconcerned with bikes) making another search at the gate unnecessary. I did have to store it under Jeff's van, and I when I got back on it realized one of my hoods was bent...but ... read more

Hello all, So we left New Mexico for San Antonio, and WOW the ride was unbearable. Okay, the landscape like I've said a hundred times is unreal, but after a while you kind of get it and just want to be in a different state. It took us around 12 hours to get from Albuquerque, NM to San Antonio, Texas. The place we stayed in San Antonio was great, it was a Crown Plaza and we got it for so cheap it almost didn't seem to make any sense. Unfortunately, we got there really late, so we were kind of out of luck when it came to eating somewhere. This has happened before and hasn't been a problem, but on those times we've eaten lunch. For those of you that haven't driven through western Texas, there ... read more

We left Baton Rouge early this morning in order to get a good start on the day. We drove the hour to New Orleans and decided to look around the le Quartier Francais. First, however, we stopped at the information center so that we wouldn't be too lost as we ambled the streets. The guy was EXTREMELY nice and helpful, our first taste of true "Southern hospitality" (although maybe it actually began in Baton Rouge with our friendly waitress at Cracker Barrel). The man gave me a lot of hints and places that we needed to go to get a good feel for the quarter and city. He then proceeded to chide me for only spending a few hours in the city, the greatest city in the world. The French Quarter was amazing. First we walked ... read more

May 21, Thursday Dennis and I were up by 7, and breakfasted and packed read to go by about 8:30. Dennis headed back to Indy, and I headed first for Morristown to talk to Laura about vans. Unfortunately, even though she was more than willing to donate the vans, the weekend of the national is also a national guard weekend, so all the van’s were already reserved. Dang it. Laura gave me a number for the Abington VA Enterprise, and maybe I can make a deal with them. After that disappointment, I rode down the west side of the Great Smokey Mtn NP, , rode the Blue Ridge Pkwy a short distance, went through Cherokee NC, caught the Cherihola Skyway for a bit, and then rode north on US 129 through the “tail of the Dragon” ... read more

Lost In America H. Wayne Cleghorn January 2009 In 2008, after watching the movie Bucket List, my wife presented me with an empty note book. The only writing in the book was at the top of the first page. It simply said, “Wayne’s Bucket List”. If you haven’t seen the movie, the character played by Morgan Freeman finds out he has terminal cancer. He begins to make a list of all the things he wants to do before he “kicks the bucket”. For a long time I would pick the book up and just look at it. Then one day I wrote something down. A few weeks later came something else. Then one night, I picked up my bucket list and for some reason wrote “To be lost in America.” Why did I write that? What ... read more

Lost in America March 2009 H. Wayne Cleghorn After deciding to drive from Reno, NV to Colorado on Highway 50, I booked my flight to Reno and return flight to Atlanta. Then I started a close examination of what lie on Highway 50 between eastern Nevada and central Utah. To my surprise, almost nothing. There are very few gas stations, and even fewer hotels. My options were to gas up at the last gas station in Nevada and hope I could make it to the first gas station in Utah. Visions of me walking away from a rental car with an empty gas tank kept dancing in my head. So, I made an executive decision. I would still fly to Reno, but instead of driving east, I would drive west. I decided to drive through nothern ... read more
