Recruiting for donations for our Morccan Dinner Party has become a full time job! Spending hours out of my day, emailing, calling and sending letters I've been disappointed with rejections but amazed by the generosity of others!! I'd like to say Thank you to those who have already contributed to our cause!! To begin with my recruiting, I contacted some friends who are also Pure Romance Consultants. Just being a touristSaturday, June 5. Today I don’t go near the house. Instead I drive to downtown Mobile and visit a 9-block historic section called De Tonti Square featuring homes from the mid 1800s. A bit further I park and meander about two-dozen blocks in sweltering 85-degree weather that must be almost 80% humidity. I am soaked after a few blocks. I think even my fingernails are sweating. But it is an interesting walk. Dilapidated buildings contrast with lovely parks and waterfalls, huge churches, small bed and breakfasts and large hotel chains. One thing that is fairly amusing is when I drove downtown, parking is sparse. So I drive into an almost empty lot and pay my $5 to the parking lot machine. On the very next block, not only is there plenty of street ... read more

Get ready. Get set. Go.Well, I'm at it again. But this time the travel is born of necessity. I need to sell a property in Mobile, AL. Don't know how long it will take to prepare the house so I've given myself 22 days between leaving and returning to LAX. How to pack for three weeks when you don't know what to expect or exactly what you'll be doing. Ah, the decisions. Lots of T shirts a few pair of pants as well as underwear and every pair of socks I have. The longer I can go without washing clothes the better I'll like it. But want to pack my computer and my Nikon Digital with two lenses so I end up taking a padded back pack for the electronics, and a separate back pack for ... read more

We had driven I-75 towards Atlanta before. It’s an interstate…flat, easy, fast and boring. We had been advised to drive through Atlanta instead of going around because it’s shorter and quicker. True….BUT….it was 8 lanes….per side. That’s 16 lanes going through Atlanta. One lane was HOV (high occupancy) and only needed 2 people. However, trucks with 6 wheels were banned. Since the RV has 6 wheels, we thought we better not try. So with cars speeding past on both sides, I gripped tight, Trish drove as hard as I did and we went right through. Washington, DC has 8 lanes BOTH ways on I-95. I thought I could handle city traffic. Suffice to say, next time we go WAY around Atlanta, if we even come close. Once past the city, Trish drove through the mountains to ... read more

After working all night I was able to take some time to get the house ready for the trip. The sprinkler is set, the clothes are don and this place is clean. I know its not really a part of a trip to clean your house, but I like to leave and come home to a clean house. Having the house clean makes me a little less nervous about leaving something critical behind because i can get a clear view of everything. Next Step: Packing! Plan on starting tonight after soccer. If I know Lesley, she will pack Friday, either after midnight on THursday night or early Friday morning. Its just her way. The photo is the crux of the plan. Its Highway 80 in its glory days. Our plan is to follow this route as ... read more

Geo: 31.3152, -85.8547We left Natchez and Mississippi and travelled across 2/3 of Alabama on Route 84. This is a state highway about 1/3 of the way up the state from the Gulf of Mexico. The town of Enterprise is the sight of the US Army Aviation Division. Along Highway 84 we saw farming, cattle ranching and a lot of forestry. Lots of logging trucks and reforestation projects. There are many abandoned farms - likely a result of people moving to the cities and the consolidation of farm and forestry land. Towns are small and usually consist of 2-3 gas stations and 2-3 churches. Very few grocery stores so people must travel to the larger centers. Most churches are either Baptists (many different divisions) and Methodist. Along the highway were lots of very nice farm holdings with ... read more

Bellingrath Gardens, fishing camp turned into gracious estate of Coca Cola mogul, Walter Bellingrath, located along the Fowl River in Theodore, Alabama, is just another reason to listen to people you meet in a bar! A casual conversation on the “top Deck” at the Pelican Reef on Dauphin Island led us here. Let the photos speak! Azaleas, cherry blossoms, and paper whites are in bloom; while gardeners scurry about planting Easter lilies and blue hydrangeas from Bellingrath’s own vast nursery, in time for the Easter egg roll on the great lawn. The garden tour was $11 each; we declined the boat cruise and house tour in the interest of time. Wide paths, unobtrusive (but functional) handrails, and alternate routes (when stairs are involved) show a great deal of thought in planning access for everyone. You exit ... read more

The Schooner had her first ferry boat crossing across Mobile Bay from Fort Morgan to get to Dauphin Island where we thought we would laze for a day or so resting up for the Big Easy! Dauphin has some great attractions. It was the site, at Fort Gaines, of the Civil War Battle of Mobile. This is where Admiral Farragut is quoted as saying, "Damn the Torpedoes - full speed ahead!" as he went on to capture the Fort and the Confederate fleet. The campgrounds are convenient from the ferry slip and within walking distance to the Estuarium, a fascinating educational attraction with a great collection of live and preserved specie that inhabit the Mobile Bay Estuary. We had the pleasure of observing two volunteer docents interacting with school children who were so engaged you could ... read more
