Tuesday, 23 November, 2010 Foggy again this morning. Around 8 Kerry took the dinghy out to the river to see how bad the fog was there. Not too bad, visibility around ½ to ¾ mile so off we went. We read that the barge traffic gets heavier the further south you travel, and today proved that to be true. We encountered 8 tows today, six of them within a 1 ½ hour period, and most of them we met in curves. One we met early this morning and the eighth passed by our anchorage tonight. We traveled almost 48 river miles today. The river was pretty winding, one ten mile section would have only been 6 miles if it had been straight. The scenery wasn’t as pretty as yesterday, fewer fall colors, lots of washed out ... read more

19 November, 2010 We spent a productive day working on the boat and ourselves. Sara and I gave each other haircuts and then Sara re-dyed her hair blue. Kerry and Sara got the new transducer installed and we now have a depth finder. Wonderful! Yesterday afternoon we got the marina courtesy car and went to Walmart to reprovision. We were down to canned goods and not great ones at that. On the way we stopped for hamburgers and French fries. Mmmm good. Trevor and I went back to town this afternoon, looking for a hose for our boat and a belt for theirs. We struck out on both counts. I had to go back to Walmart, too, because I forgot I needed a prescription refilled. I also bought a carrot cake for Sara’s birthday. I finally ... read more

(Shocco Springs Conference Center) We’re serving Talladega, Alabama this month, at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center. (Talladega is about 120 miles west of Atlanta, and 40 miles east of Birmingham.) I mentioned that the trees were bare when we left Kentucky, but they were green with just a hint of color when we arrived here, and two weeks later the ground is covered with red and yellow leaves! I have a whole different perspective on autumn leaves now, because we don’t have to rake them, and we don’t have to look at bare trees for the next five months! So as they drift down, and pile up on the grass, it’s nothing but beautiful! We were to have six couples on this team, but one man was hurt on the last project and had to go ... read more

Wednesday, 17 November, 2010 The day turned pretty after this morning’s fog. We continued downriver, passing white chalk cliffs and colorful fall foliage glowing in the sunlight. At mile 224 of the Tombigbee Waterway we followed Earendil into a sheltered cove at what the locals call Rattlesnake Bend. The water was only about 6 feet deep at the entrance to the inlet, but soon dropped to 20 feet. Trevor set their anchor and we rafted up with them. They took the dinghy to shore and walked on solid ground for a while. The temperature started dropping as soon as the sun went down and the fog moved in quickly. By bedtime we couldn’t see the mouth of the inlet or the sailboat, Take 5, anchored there. Late in the night clouds moved in, the temperature climbed ... read more

Tuesday, 16 November, 2010 We gave Sara and Trevor a head start, knowing we’d catch up with them before Heflin Lock near Gainesville, AL. What we didn’t know were the small kinks in our plan waiting for us this morning. Kerry started the engine to warm it up and start recharging batteries while he went below for a quick wash in the bathroom sink. The engine temperature alarm started sounding, causing Oh-Shit reactions in both of us. It turns out we have a pesky leak somewhere in our cooling system, so once Kerry added water to the radiator, it cooled right down. We just need to check that more often. We did catch up with the kids at the lock, it had just opened when we arrived and the lock down was fast and smooth. Our ... read more

Saturday, 13 November, 2010 A sunny and warm morning after last night’s excitement. The day didn’t start out too well. First we spilled coffee and wet coffee grounds all over the galley counter. Big mess. Then we got an email saying the package containing our new transducer could not be delivered to the marina in Demopolis as addressed. It turns out the guy at the marina had given Kerry the physical address, not the PO box where they receive mail. We stopped at Pirate’s Marina Cove near Bevill Lock and Dam so Sara could get some fuel and be assured of making it to the next fuel stop a little over 100 miles downriver in Demopolis. It was a breezy day and we thought about anchoring in the bay near the marina, but it was too ... read more

Riding the Void 5 First, a ride report without pictures. How could that be you might ask? Well, when you fail to copy the pictures from the camera’s memory card and then turn that card in for scoring not to be returned…..well, you have no pictures. So I’ll just have to paint the pictures for you. The Void 5 for us kicked off in Valdosta, GA. We planned an early departure so we could be there in time to rest a bit and then socialize. The concept was a quick trip to Birmingham to visit Bogart’s BMW who was having a going out of business sale with loads of discounts, and then straight to Valdosta. We made what was to be a quick stop in Tuscaloosa to fill a prescription (which took 45 minutes), rode to ... read more

Midway Marina Fulton, MS 10/4/2010 Since I had arrived back from my drive to St. Louis late I could sleep in the next morning. It felt a little lonely to be by myself for a couple of days. I decided to visit the Shiloh Church battlefield. This battle during the early years of the Civil War cost about 26,000 soldiers their lives. The Union troops had taken a fort on the Tennessee River and another on the Cumberland River and after these successes tried via the Tennessee River to occupy Corinth, which had an important railway connection. Access was necessary in order to reach and control the all-important waterway - the Mississippi River. The commerce of the confederacy depended on the river. The Union troops landed at a place today known as Pittsburgh Landing. The Confederate ... read more

9-22-10-10 Had one last walk on our deserted beach this morning and then headed for Gulf Shores, AL. Glenn’s Aunt Sue lived for some time in Gautier, so we tried to take a few pictures along the way to Pascagula. We stopped at the Visitor’s Center just after we crossed the Alabama line. The nicest grandma gave us our state map, then proceeded to tell us all of the good spots in the area...dining, attractions, etc. Turns out her son lives in Tacoma and her daughter in San Francisco. She said she’d take a ride back that way with us when we go :) Arrived at the Gulf Shores RV Park and set up camp. It is a small park, but everyone we’ve seen is really nice. We drove into town...it’s probably 5 miles...and stopped at ... read more

Tue 14th Sept- Got on the local bus in the wrong direction so took over an hour and a half to get downtown instead of 15 mins and bus was a loose term it was more like a minibus-very hot and made me feel soooo sick!! Finally made it downtown and then we took the trolley on two tours around the town to see all the historic sights such as the capitol building and the house of martin luther king. Great value for $1 and the tour guide/driver was so funny and nice. Also headed down to the river front and then eat downtown before going back to the Inn. Wed 15th Sept- Managed to successfully get the local buses to an out of town shopping mall, didn't buy anything but it was a really hot ... read more
