We had a one day stop at Theodore, Alabama, and went over to Dauphin Island. Dauphin Island is attached to the mainland by a 5 km bridge, and although seems quite far from restuarants and shopping, was quite heavily populated. Most houses are built on pilons to protect from hurricanes. And what Atlantic Island would be complete without a fort? Fort Gaine was still in respectable condition, and even had an on-site blacksmith to demonstrate his trade. A day off. Tuesday, June 8. Drive about 30 miles south of Mobile to Bellingrath Gardens and Home. Get there about 9 AM. By the time I get about two steps away from the car, I am sweating. By the time I bought my tickets, I am soaked. The 10,000 sq ft mansion was built in 1935 by one of the first US bottlers of Coca Cola. Apparently bottling was an extremely lucrative business. I stroll the gardens (there are 65 acres under cultivation out of the 900 acres that make up the property), tour the house, and take a 45-min cruise down the River of Birds, which are in short supply that day: one brown pelican, one nesting ospray, and a couple dozen gulls. Bellingrath Gardens, fishing camp turned into gracious estate of Coca Cola mogul, Walter Bellingrath, located along the Fowl River in Theodore, Alabama, is just another reason to listen to people you meet in a bar! A casual conversation on the “top Deck” at the Pelican Reef on Dauphin Island led us here. Let the photos speak! Azaleas, cherry blossoms, and paper whites are in bloom; while gardeners scurry about planting Easter lilies and blue hydrangeas from Bellingrath’s own vast nursery, in time for the Easter egg roll on the great lawn. The garden tour was $11 each; we declined the boat cruise and house tour in the interest of time. Wide paths, unobtrusive (but functional) handrails, and alternate routes (when stairs are involved) show a great deal of thought in planning access for everyone. You exit ... read more
