“But if you do not find an intelligent companion, a wise and well-behaved person going the same way as yourself, then go on your way alone, like a king abandoning a conquered kingdom, or like a great elephant in the deep forest– The Buddha.” About 4am April 30th I woke up on the bottom bunk, in my blue silk sleep sack, that's when it hit me, I had arrived. The last few weeks have been a bit of a blur, leaving my job, moving home, seeing friends, it's all kind of been building up to that moment at 4am, the sense that a new beginning was happening, here I am, in a 6 bed dorm in Cancun. The journey was long but comfortable, as I people watched on the flight over I was judging these 20 something's in heels and make up all ready for the clubs drinking miniatures at the back of the plane as if I was a house party, I now realise I shouldn't have, I am no better than them, we are just very different, but let's face it we're are all searching for the same thing, happiness. We breezed off the plane and though the airport
with a slight hiccup at customs, Sophie was questioned about her intentions, we've decided her newly died hair made her look like she was running and it certainly didn't help that when she said she was traveling with a friend I had already disappeared. The bus from the airport to the bus station was easy to access, Spanish however is not for me, just now. Soon I hope! I was shocked by the AC bus that turned up, the fanciest public bus I've ever been on.Once relaxed into the hostel we were approached by Daniel, he asked us where we were from and invited us to play cards with him, once deciding which rules to play we started a game of shithead, a simple dinner of pasta was included in the price of the hostel which was amazing! A few other people joined us to play cards after dinner, one girl Tessa told us a story of how long her journey to Cancun had been because her bus had been hijacked, she said masked men with machetes had got on the bus and chucked them all off with their rucksacks luckily at the side of the road, the bus driver
was pleading with them not to get off, fearing for his life, she said it was horrible, it shocked me a bit, into the reality of the real life dangers of this part of the world. Tessa had only one day left and after the night shift and a few hours sleep the next day Daniel took us to the beach, he knew someone that worked at one of the beach bars and got us all free entry (normally $40) it was raining but swimming in that Aqua sea and sipping cocktails on the beach was bliss... Tessa was one of those people you meet with whom you immediately connect, in jokes are understood and your sense of humour just gels, miss you Tessa!
