I was on a total of four buses to get from Real de Catorce to Zacatecas. I arrived there a little after 9pm, and the town looked amazing at night. Luckily the hostal (Hostal Villa Colonial) had some open beds. $9 a night with an amazing view of the whole town. Zacatecas has one of the coolest cathedrals in all of Mexico, a lot of museums, and a cable car (teleferico) that takes you to the top of La Cerra de la Bufa, a hill/mountain on one side of the bowl shaped city. One of the oldest silver mines in North America is here. It goes seven levels down under ground. The first few levels are flooded, so the tour takes you four levels down. This is a very safe town and I can't help use ... read more

I only left the US five days ago but already it seems like that was ages ago! It was sad to leave Phoenix - I´ll miss Luba, Terry and Sean but at least I know I´ll probably be going back there before I go home. I also miss the guaranteed comfortable bed every night, air conditioning and clean water! On the bus into Mexico I was the only non-Mexican. I know this because when we got to the border at Nogales, the bus proceeded to drive straight through customs with no one worrying about getting their passports stamped. When I eventually realised that we weren´t actually stopping at all I had to make the driver stop the bus so that I could go back into the US, give them my green Visa waiver thing and then ... read more

After over a month in Mexico we are now officially sick of the buses. Always with movies being played but often competing with the drivers radio. And frequently we are arriving at our destination before the movie is finished. Hmm. Zacatecas is set in the hills at around 2500 meters but it was surprisingly warm. We stayed at the Hotel Condesa which was quite pleasant. Unlike Guadalajara this town had a lovely feeling. The streets were busy with vendors and the stone buildings ranged in colour from orange to pink. The cathedral was particularly spectacular. We found a lot of upmarket shopping and didn't see any other foreigners. We saw some people protesting outside the government buildings and guessed that the tractors we had passed heading into town had something to do with it. And sure ... read more

The last stop, Zacatecas, couldn't have been any better. This was one of our favorite cities in Mexico and also a favorite by many others as it is a Unesco World Heritage site. The state of Zacateces is actually one of Mexico's largest, but smallest in population. The city of Zacatecas has an altitude of 2445m, which is 5m higher than Mexico City, which makes for some hot days and cold nights, even in the summer. Zacatecas is approx. 4 hours from Guadalajara, with good weather and good traffic which we had. The scenery quickly changes as we traveled further north. This is actually the farthest north that we had traveled during our time in Mexico. Once again, as you can see from the photos, Zacatecas is quite an impressive Mexican city, but it is much ... read more

I arrived in Zacatecas after a 9 hour bus ride which was supposed to take only 5 hours (I guess I better get used to Mexican time!). I arrived at about 9 PM and it was pouring rain once again while I was looking for somewhere to stay. After about an hour of looking for a place, I stumbled upon Hostel Villa Cononial, which would become my home for the next three nights. The hostel was an amazing bargain about 9 bucks per night with a rooftop patio that had a view of the city like NO OTHER and was located right in the city center!! I hung out for a bit talking to some Anthropology students about their experiences living with and studying the indigineous tribes and languages of the Chichimec Indians before going ... read more
