This morning we were up very early as we are going to the Mexican Gulf at Progreso. We leave the hotel at 7am and walk to the bus station. A 20 minute walk at this time of the day is absolutely fine. We locate the bus station, purchase return tickets and walk straight on to a bus. We even get seats near the front! We were expecting a chicken bus but actually it’s quite a nice air con one. We settle back in our seats and enjoy the 55 minute journey to the coast. We have arrived in Progreso and already the heat is quite intense. We pass the first item of interest - a tall lighthouse. It’s been built quite a long way from the sea shore...making us wonder whether it is of much use ... read more

Always a bright, sunny day here in Progreso. Saw volleyball on the beach this morning. Boat on shore selling fish. Lots of people around, and many pelicans and sea gulls swarming. The big fish were still intact, but had been sliced into steaks. The water seemed clearer today. Lots of swimmers out. More people around today. Probably some Mexican tourists in from Merida for the weekend. Our hotel was empty before, but now has no vacancy, although it is a small one. Took a walk west along the Malecon again. Heard the doves cooing. A dusty road continues past the end of the walkway, which we followed for a while. Many dogs roaming around. A guy with a cooler on the back of his cycle wanted to sell us fresh fish! People were friendly. A motorcycle ... read more

Breakfast on the roof, then a walk east along the beach for a couple of miles. We hit the high tide about 10:30. Beach was very secluded with just a few walkers and playing dogs. Many large homes, some almost mansions, some run down. Not much sign of life, no "for rent" signs, so probably vacation property of Mexicans. Saw many overturned fishing boats up on shore, and one fast-moving catamaran out on the water. Saw a couple of small kids playing in the water. The wind was very brisk. Lots of washed-up kelp along the shore. I picked up some small white shells as we walked along. Got a good view of the long pier. It goes out straight, then turns to the left. About 2.5km were built in 1942, a terminal was built in ... read more

Had fruit, rolls, and coffee for breakfast this morning on the roof. A little breezy, but very pleasant. No other guests are ever up there, so we have our own private patio. Progreso itself seems so much less crowded than yesterday. The cruise ships are now gone, and along with them the masses of people. Ships are said to come in a couple of times a week. We walked the beach west this morning. The water here is very murky, saw no swimmers. No pedestrians are allowed on the 5-mile pier, But a boardwalk circles around underneath the pier and takes you to the continuation of the Malecon. In this area you begin to see many old fishing boats. It is here that a walking pier juts off into the water. Several fishermen with nets and ... read more

Good breakfast of fruit, rolls, and coffee included at the hostel. Noticed this morning they have three house cats. Very cute. We reserved the same place for two nights after our return from Progreso. We spent the morning sightseeing. Walked to Plaza Grande. This time noticed lots of purple flowers, posts in which to plug your devices, lots of laurel trees, and several shoeshine chairs. Horses and carriages lined the street. On the east side of the Plaza is the Cathedral de San Ildefonso, begun in 1561. It Is on the site of an old Myan temple. Some of the stone from the temple was used in construction. There is a giant crucifix behind the altar, but the interior is not particularly ornate. A statue which was burned without charring was supposed to be present, but ... read more

...cruise vacation continued! Our first stop of two was in Progreso, Mexico. This was a new port to all of us. This port is unique in that you have to take a shuttle for several miles just to get to land. It is one of the longest piers in the world, and illegal to attempt the walk. None of us booked any excursions and decided to just head to the beach. Once off the shuttle, we walked several blocks and found an area where we could sit with our feet in the sand and be served. We were surprised at the number of children peddling necklaces and other items on the beach. Jeremy got sucked in and helped a little girl by buying one and just letting her have the whole $20 bill. It wasn't long ... read more

Ola, Vandaag is Luka ziek. ... read more

Me gusta mucho!... read more

Progesso is about a half hour drive to the coast, from Merida. On a nice hot January day we decided to venture to the beach in our rental car. It was an easy drive due north of the city, through scrub land featuring palmetto fronds and brush. The landscape here is very flat, and the flatness continues beyond the shore. Indeed, Progresso has what is said to be the world's longest pier, at 4 miles. But it is no longer walkable, due to 'national security.' The pier is so long because the depth of the water remains too shallow for shipping, closer to shore. The seawater of the Gulf isn't very attractive here — mostly turbulent and lacking that gorgeous blue of the Caribbean beaches. Progresso seems a nice enough beach community, aside from its water ... read more

5/5/09 = Progresso Beach Good sleep despite the sweat provoking heat and woke up at 8:30 with desire to sleep forever. Only the lure of fresh bread and 4 slices of it toasted, got me out of bed :). Chichen Itza still closed due to dreaded flu and the second best thing = underground caves also closed. Had to go for the third thing on the list…Progresso Beach. Been a while since had a beach day and couldn’t lounge around doing nothing again. Changed and off we went to catch our 11peso, 30min bus to take us to the beach. Low expectations - not supposed to be the nicest beach in Mexico or anything - but still looking forward to it. Got off bus in Progresso town, took a few wrong turns, got some directions from ... read more
