Dear All Greetings again from Mexico! Yay!! I’ve made it back to this wonderful country, and I’m actually so glad to be here again. Whilst Belize was an experience, I’ve decided to add it to my (very small) list of countries which I would not choose to visit again in the foreseeable future, along with Russia and Venezuela. I will relate more on this below, but for now it’s sufficient to say I’ve really enjoyed my travels again since arriving back in Mexico on Sunday, this country is so hospitable, warm and welcoming. Pretty much the opposite I’d say to Belize, which has probably made me appreciate Mexico even more – you can’t have the good without the bad, so they say. So last off I wrote from pretty much the middle of the Belizean bush ... read more

The most recent trip to the Yucatan was more than wonderful. Although it wasn’t the first time I have traveled to foreign soils to relax, read and take a break from stresses, both real and imagined, that’s exactly what this trip meant to me. Staying at Ms. Ophelia’s Hotel Mucuy is always a vacation in itself. I read, napped and sat in solitude in the courtyard of the beautiful no-frills establishment in the heat of the Yucatan during the day. I ventured to the heart of Centro, the historical district, after the sun sank and the breezes cooled the land and occupants. I saw many friends and didn’t realize how deeply I miss this lovely part of the universe until this trip. My friend Guillo and I had lunch outside of Centro in a new, chic ... read more

HE SAID... This afternoon we were travelling west from Chichen Itza to Merida. After a mix-up with the public bus, we were left standing under a tree in the Chichen Itza car park at 6pm, only to discover that the bus we were booked on had left right under our noses at 5:10pm. Our guide caught a taxi into nearby Piste and returned 15 minutes later with a minibus and a driver. We squeezed into the minibus with our packs and left the Chichen Itza ruins at 6:30pm. We also gave a young guy who missed the same bus a lift in the nimbus – he had travelled from Mexico City to look for a new life in Merida – it was a big leap of faith on his part, and it would have stalled completely ... read more

Kaupunginmuseo oli kiinni. Poikettiin taidemuseossa. Vein vaatteet pesulaan. Jotta varmistin, etta vaaleita ja tummia ei pesta yhdessa, vein ne eri pesuloihin. Kaytiin katsomassa kaupallista keskustaa pohjoisessa.... read more

Ostettiin huomisaamuksi bussiliput. Kaupunkikierros. Peru-aiheinen valokuvanäyttely. Pulahdin hotellin uima-altaassa. Illallinen lähimmän aukion ravintolassa.... read more

Takaisin tultiin taksilla.... read more

Aamulla näin mm. pyöräilijöitä. Bussimatkalla satoi. Ilma viileni johonkin 25 asteeseen. Kaupunkikierros meksikolaisen kanssa joka oli myös matkalla. Matkatoimistosta esitelehti ja varaukset Chichen Itzan valonäytökseen. Jäätelöä. Aukiolla viiniä. Illalla paikallista ruokaa.... read more

Sunday Breakfast Went for a nice walk to Gran Square-Park. The pictures are of another unique custom in Mexico. The food vendors serve breakfast after Mass. I walked up to Santa Lucia Church and went to Mass. There was a delightful young lady, maybe 8 years old, next to me. We shook hands and then did a high five and a fist bump. Bought a pouch for my passport and $ and also a change purse. They are leather with Mayan designs. Had breakfast at Bistroel 57. Met a couple from northern Ontario, and a couple of ladies from Martha's Vineyard. Just a relaxing day and I will work on my blog. I cannot resist an opportunity to bore my family and friends.... read more

Celestum and Flamingos This is a nice day trip. The guide explained the flamingos. They fly down from Canada to breed. They eat 12 hours a day. They are shallow water feeding birds. The flamingo mates for life and has one egg per birth. They generally mate twice each winter. We went on the trip with two couples from Arkansas. The couples were friendly and one of the guys was a very knowledgeable fisherman. Both of the guys were lawyers.... read more

General Information and Impression of Merida Merida is a beautiful and safe city. It has a lot of police and they actually help motorists when their car breaks down. The police are everywhere. Every couple of blocks they have a park which is usually on a square block or half a block in size. There are two Churches within a half a block of The Grand Hotel. Merida is the oldest city in North or South America. It was established in 1540. The cathedral was built with the stone blocks from the old Mayan city of THo. The Cathedral is massive and very beautiful. The Cathedral was probably completed around 1580.... read more
