For my last full day in Merida I wanted to do some shopping to pick up souvenirs for people, sit in a park and not really do anything else specific. It was a really warm, sunny day and also ended up being the one we did the most walking.
The first walk was to breakfast that I thought was good. I had fried eggs on rice with avocado and fried plantains and fresh orange juice. Once we were done eating we walked to the main square and went in the Museo Casa Montejo. This front of this building is the oldest house in Merida. Inside is a free museum offering decorated rooms in the home as well as revolving exhibitions. Climbing to the second floor gives you a nice view out onto the square.
From here we continued walking to a clothing market. I wanted to get some things for my niece and nephew and this was the place to go. There were several rows of people selling the colorful shirts and dresses you see all over in Merida. Most of the stalls had the same stuff sold by different people. I was able to find a few cute
items, including a shirt for myself! I will enjoy that in the summer when it’s 95 degrees!
Lots more walking, mostly on the shady side of the street, until we arrived at Pancho Maiz for lunch. If you are ever in Merida you MUST eat here! The food was inexpensive and all made from scratch on site. If you can’t tell from the name, this place celebrates corn. There are different tortilla base options to chose from as well as a variety of toppings. I decided to try the memela with pollo rostizado. The memela is sort of a boat shaped tortilla with raised sides. The chicken was delicious and in a brown sauce. Topped with some kind of cheese and a dollop of crema it was one of the best bites of the trip. For dessert we shared one of their seasonal offerings, a mango/passionfruit mouse surrounded by a coconut milk tapioca with chunks of mango. This was the best dessert and worthy of a 5 star restaurant. We agreed in a year or two this place will be higher priced because it will become super famous.
Now the other best part of going to Pancho Maiz
Temporary exhibition
This was actually really cool. The art is printed on silver plates and was not boring to look at. was discovering the small honey store attached, Miel Balam Kaab. While waiting for our food, my aunt and I went in to look at the honey. I am so glad we did! The lady was so nice and when she heard I spoke English she asked if she could practice her English. She told us how they work with 3 beekeepers and then proceeded to give us samples of the 8 different honeys. There were four plain varieties and then four with added flavors. One had cocoa nibs and had just a slight chocolate taste when you bit down on one, one had pumpkin seeds, one had a variety of seeds and one had chili. I tried them all, even the chili although I wouldn’t buy it for myself. After eating our meal we went back in and I bought a ton of honey to bring home. One of the friendliest stores I have ever been in.
More walking took us back to the Airbnb where I immediately took a cold shower and rested for a bit. I went down by the pool where I ended up playing Barbies with the little girl who lives in the house. That
Lunch
One of the best bites of food! was not planned but I was sitting there and she brought them out. Oh well.
On Friday nights there is this cool light show on the front of the cathedral. It is a video mapping of the history of Merida, although I didn’t really get much history out of it. What I did see was a very colorful display that was pretty cool to watch for 20ish minutes. Especially when eating a marquesita with bananas, cheese and Nutella! After the heat and all the walking I was relieved to arrive back to my room and crawl in to bed.
