This morning I have had an email to say that my mum has been taken to hospital during the night so before we do anything I need to make a few calls. The hospital inform me that mum has been discharged. It appears she is back home and OK. We decide to take a short trip out to Ek Balam. It’s another archaeological site. We are tempted to say - oh no, not another one, but we are told it’s a good trip so off we go. First we stop for breakfast in the covered food hall near the town square. Two food stalls are fighting for our custom so we take one each. My man has a glossy menu with photographs on it. Perfect! I want this, I say, pointing to two fried eggs. I ... read more

We took our time waking up today, but we were still up by 0700hrs. We headed to Ek'Balam via a taxi colectivo from Calle 44, between Calle 35 and 37. We were summoned from across the intersection by the driver. The price to Ek'Balam was fixed at MXN160, but we opted to wait for two more passengers (the max they can take being 4) to spread out the cost. It took about 1/2 hr before two locals showed up for the trip. They weren't going to the archeological site, but somewhere beyond. We'd recommend to set up going with other travellers ahead of time to avoid the wait at either end, especially the ruins side since it's more difficult to tell who came with a tour and who might need to share a colectivo back to ... read more

The third set of Mayan ruins that I visited after Palenque and Tulum were at Ek' Balam situated ~30 kms north of Valladolid. The ruins don't get near the traffic of nearby Chichén Itzá which is a major part of their appeal. Ek' Balam means "Black Jaguar" and although it's been eons since any jaguar prowled the premises there is a tomb with an incredible carved doorway depicting the mouth of a jaguar-monster. US$ ≈ 13 Mexican pesos (M$) Playa del Carmen Secondary beach resort to Cancún/Cozumel but purportedly not as built up as either. I stayed a few blocks back from the beach which has a totally different ambiance than around "La Quinta" where all the schwanky hotels and restaurants are located. I really just wanted some beach time (which is beautiful all along the ... read more

Some pointers for Washingtinians traveling to Mexico: 1. El Sol is bright down here... plan accordingly or you will be burned whilst simultaneously attracted as a moth to a flame... 2. Pedestrians DO NOT have the right-away... you WILL get hit by a car if you expect it to stop or slow down on account of you crossing the street... 3. DO NOT put toilet paper inside of the toilet... this sounds disconcerting because it is... there will always be a trash can close to the bano for the purposes of toilet paper disposal... 4. ALWAYS have incense and candles readily available for the mysteriously rank smells that drift up from the sinks in your departamento (apartment). 5. Ever heard of water pressure? Mexico has NOT. 6. Butter melts in .29 seconds within removal of the ... read more

Cobá, Q.R., a 4 de octubre del 2009. Saludos. Aùn asì ... read more
