Yet another bus journey landed us at Piste the small town on the outskirts of Chichen Itza. We got there about 4pm and needed to find somewhere to stay for the night. Chichen Itza can be travelled to from other destinations in Mexico in a day but the tours all arrive at around 10am-11am so the point of staying overnight was to avoid the crtouds and get there for opening at 8am. There were a few hotels next to the bus station and the town was realtively small so we checked into one that was clean and okay. It even had a pool which we both agreed would probably have been very welcoming back in the 1960´s!! We took a wonder around the town settling at a local restaurant. We found ourselves enjoying a cold beverage ... read more

Cancun, 12-01-1990. While James is trying hard to chat up the asian lady in the chair nexzt to him, without much success by the looks of it, i watch The mexican peninsula of Yucatan through the small plane window getting closer and closer and with it Cancun, our port of entry in Mexico. Cancun is a busy town full with hamburger fat americans who probably lodge out at Zona Hotelera, a strip of land between the ocean at one side and a green lagoon at the other side full with huge hotels, all of them in the 5 star expensive shit sort of thing. The locals must make a bundle here in Cancun judging from all the shopping these fatso americans to at the countless souvenir shops and stuffing themselves on mexican restaurants that are ... read more

Valladolid, 15-01-1990. We spent the whole day at Chichen Itza yesterday admiring these ancient ruins. We heart a rumour that those people who excavated this site did so under the infuence of the infamous mexican magic mushrooms in order to get the idea about the lay out of the place, the way the buildings used to look like, what it was like to live in that Mayan society. These archelogical diggers must have been a happy bunch when they were donig thier work here! ... read more

Valladolid, 16-01-1990. Spending yet another day at Chichen Itza, we managed to get inside El Castillo. Inside El Castillo is a second piramide within which one can see, after climbing a steep staircase which is damp and moisty with severly stale air, a stone jaguar with jade eyes. Very impressive indeed! We also found out that there are nine steps on each side of El Castillo, added with the upper platform there are in total 365 steps or the number of days in a year. Maybe the best part of the day was meeting two signorinas from Italia who are also lodging in Valladolid and will have dinner with us tonight. Much to the delight of James who is way too shy around the female part of the human population on this world to ever ask ... read more

Day 15: Monday 14th July - An early morning at Chichen Itza Nearly got locked out of my hostel last night - would probably have been a blessing because its a dump, but all my gear is inside so have to wake the owners up (and probably the whole neighbourhood) to get in! Get up early to beat the crowds at Chichen Itza - not with a baseball bat but there are a few obnoxious tourists there on day trips from Cancun who probably deserve it!! - rather to get there before its swarming with tourists. Chichen Itza is probably the most famous Mayan site and therefore the most popular. Whilst undoubtedly impressive it lacks the backdrop of Palenque, the rawness of Calakmul, and perhaps the beauty of Uxmal. Its on a par with the aforementioned ... read more

The great castillo is one of the most aesthetically pleasing and interesting structures I've ever seen. It is a physical representation of the Mayan calender. The nine levels are divided into two by a staircase representing the 18 months of the calender year. There are 91 steps on each o the 4 stair cases, which when combined with the top platform makes 365, the number of days in a year. On each facade there are 52 flat panels which represent the 52 year calender round. Also the pyramid is oriented in such a way that on the equinoxes there is a light effect that looks like a snake ascending the stairs in the spring and descending in the fall. The main staircase is marked with two large ornate serpent heads at its base and if you ... read more

Eric and I went to Chichen Itza and Tulum! It has been a dream of ours to see the Mayan Ruins. We went on a tour booked through Olympus Tours the operator's name is Riviera Maya. Our tour guide to Chichen was excellent. His name was Ivan and he was so interesting and funny. But before we got to Chichen we swam in a sink hole and ate at a buffet while watching traditional Mayan dancers perform. The next day we went to Tulum. Both were spectular and worth seeing. ... read more

Hola Amigos, Well its not really called Chicken Pizza, but more of that later. We have finally started our adventure. After 2 days of flying, we landed in Cancun, for what is the US equivalent of schooies week. Lucky for us we were not where all the party goers are, we are more in the backpackers area. All we did on the first day was have a good sleep in, and then a meet and greet with our GAP leader and 8 travelling companions (2 Aussies, 3 British, 1 Dutch, 1 Canadian and 1 American). Day 2 is when the travelling began, after 3 hours on the bus, we hit the first of the "big 3" ruin sites, Chichen Itza. It is pretty amazing what you can do with your bare hands. Most impressive was the ... read more
