After a late arrival in Playa del Carmen, I was glad to book a tour to Chichen Itza the next day. Chichen Itza is the famous Mayan ruin city, now one of the new 7 wonders of the world. Chichen Itza if famous for its big pyramids, and for the Mayan calendar that was found there, which ends on December 21st, 2012. Some say this predicts the date of the end of the world, I guess we will find out soon enough if they are right.. I found Chichen Itza quite impressive, though prefer the Tikal ruins in Guatamala, as they where more remote and overgrown by rainforrest. The next day I decided to visit a Cenote, which are sinkholes containing groundwater. These are dotted all over the Yucatan peninsula, and in some of these you ... read more

I know it says this is about Chichén Itzá, but it´s also about Merida, so don´t feel like it got left out. So yesterday remember how I was supposed to go to that tamale party with the kids in my class? Yeah. Well, they didn´t show up to where we were supposed to meet. So I hung out with this girl Rachel instead. Oh, and a little Mayan man who first tried to sell me cigars and then noticed my necklace and talked to me for like an hour and a half about his traditions and being a mayan and stuff. It was basically awesome. I think what he does for a living is sell his Mayan experience to interested tourists, because he kept offering to take me to sites to do rituals together and stuff. ... read more

N - 20.68378degrees W - 088.56870 degrees Elevation - 138 ft. This, my friends is a bit of a long story! The story begins at the airport in Cancun. I think we flew in about 8 or 9 in the evening. It was of course after 10 by the time we got through customs. We needed transport and weren’t sure what our best option was going to be so we struck up a conversation with some “wonderful” transportation representatives. They made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. “Do a 1.5 hour tour of a timeshare resort in Playa del Carmen and get a free breakfast and free bus-ride and tickets to Chichen Itza. We thought perfect we get a nice breakfast for our first day in Playa and we get our trip to Chichen sorted ... read more

Today we sent off for Chichen Itza. One word: overrated. They stopped allowing tourists to walk up the main pyramid a few years ago so there wasn't a lot of walking up steps at this one. It's the most complete city we've seen and the ball court was impressive. But the amount of tourists (many of them Amecians dressed in bikini tops, denim micro shorts and cowboy boots) made it busy and less enjoyable. So far my favourites have been Teotihuacan for its size and ability to walk up the stairs and Palenque for the beauty and craftsmanship of the carvings. After Chichen Itza we headed for Cancun. Our hotel is 25 minutes from the Hotel Zone, where the five star hotels and nightlife is located. But it's also only a 15 minute bus trip to ... read more

Another early morning to try and get to visit a temple ruin before the world and his dog arrive! Chichen Itza is one of the most famous and most visited temple ruins in Mexico. Apparently someone recently made a list of ´the new 7 wonders of the world´and Chichen Itza was on it. I just like the name, it reminds me of ´chicken pizza´!!!! It´s a really nice site, but unfortunately you aren´t allowed to climb any of the structures anymore which is a shame. Won´t bore you with any of the historical info, but I had a really nice morning there and left just as the coachloads of American and Japanese tourists started to pour in! ps Haven´t seen any rain for over a week- yey! This a a posting to get everyone on board about our latest travel plans. We will be departing for the Yucatan peninsula on September 27. First we will head strait to Merida and then to the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza. Around the Equinox the pyramid at the ruins gets hit just right with the light and looks like a serpent going up the corner of the pyramid or something along those lines. I haven't read about it lately so correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, we should be there by the 30th to celebrate my 30th birthday with the ancients as it were. Beyond that we will begin an extended journey for which we have no set itinerary. We are going to visit Natalie's uncle in Cancun for a short while and then continue ... read more

(August 6, 2007-August 8, 2007) The Yucatan was the region of Mexico that every friend of mine from Mexico talked about. Merida, Chichen Itza, and Tulum were what everyone described to be the best of Mexico. My research into my travels always seemed to discuss Tulum, and thus became so fascinating--due to stories and pictures from everywhere--that it became the main place I had to visit. But before that Janneth and I visited Merida, Celestun, and Chichen Itza, which also make the Yucatan Peninsula one of the most beautiful places I have been to. Our plane left Mexico City late on Monday, but made up the time in the air, arriving into Merida on schedule. Full of money because I had received my last pay check that day, we splurged on a rental car--500 pesos per ... read more

Our last morning was spent at the popular and very likeable Nomadas Hostel where we enjoyed our continental breakfast. From there, we chose a one way trip to Cancun, but first stopping at the ever so popular and intriguing ruins of Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is the most famous and best restored of the Yucatan Peninsula's Maya sites. It is even more popular now today because it was just recently selected as ONE OF THE NEW SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD. www.new7wonders.com Chichen Itza may be overrun by large groups of tourists, but it is still quite an impressive site and history lesson we should all be so lucky to experience. We had a guide, Spanish speaking, for the entire time while visiting Chichen Itza, which is the best way to see the ruins because there ... read more
