Our time at Curtis and Janet's home has been absolutely amazing! Such beautiful people and incredibly helpful in preparing us for across the border. After spending a fantastic 4 days with them we sadly said our goodbyes and headed off in excitement and slightly nervous for the Brownsville border crossing to Mexico. We took 3 hours to complete the border crossing which is a bit slow given the small volume of traffic at that hour but not a problem really.

Once we cleared customs and rode into Mexico, the contrast to where we had come from was stark. The road conditions (whilst not terribly) deteriorated and buildings and vehicles looked more run down. Not long after arriving we noticed a heavy police and army presence. Utes drove by with armed police and army personnel clad in black complete with face masks and helmets, and most intimidatingly guns. They stood facing toward us on the backs of the utes and sent a strong message that they weren't there to muck about, we stopped for fuel and the attendant told Gerardo that 60 people had been shot by the police 2km from where we were.

We continued on in the heat which was around 33 but dropped to 29 after some rainfall (which missed us). We arrived at Ciudad, Victoria around 5.30 and settled in / cleaned up before heading downstairs where the hotel had put on drinks and bar food. We then had dinner at the mall and hit the hay after a whirlwind first day in Mexico.

PS. Janet, my restraint was poor and the M&M's were gone by lunch. The pink bag has come in handy already! ?

Mexico
Hi there, Wow Mexico! Will be interested to hear your thoughts as you travel south. My impression is that things become dramatically more '3rd world' the further south you go towards South America. This is where intrepid starts to kick in. I assume your travelling companions are experienced enough in these places to keep you all safe. You hear some horror stories...or maybe they're all myths and legends and you'll be safe as houses...Do you have any idea what the coverage for cellphones & internet connection is going to be like for the rest of your journey? We will worry if you disappear off the radar for longer than a few days unexpectedly. Doesn't need to be much... :-) will suffice to let us know you're OK !! Quick question....how do you eat M&Ms through a helmet viser? hahahaha Have fun!! :-) Anna
