This trip started off with a little more intensity than normally goes into one of my trips; of course I normally travel alone this time, however, I had 16 travel companions. We started our journey at Nick and Tricia’s place in Mesa, AZ. The group was a little slow to get moving as the night before we decided to consume an obscene amount of alcohol while playing tippy cup/flip cup. Things got a little “weird” that night, turns out that would be the theme of the entire extended weekend. Three vehicles were enough to get the majority of the part loaded up and on the road. We took off with: Bart, Blake, Sarah, Samantha (Sam), Nick, Tricia, Artie, John, Haley, Ashley, Josh, Brandon, Nicole, and me (Derek). Chris would be added before we made it out ... read more

With a couple friends we went to Puerto Penasco, Mexico, dubbed "Rocky Point" by the gajillion Americans that frequent. It's a short jaunt from Tucson--only about 215 miles southwest. The road there leads through miles and miles of scenic desert until, like a mirage, you reach the once sleepy, ocean side town. I guess it's not really a town anymore though parts of it have the feel as though it still is. We rented a house in Las Conchas. It's the area of the city that is packed with condos and beach side homes. We opted for a house instead of the Resort/Hotel filled Sandy Beach because A: it's a whole house! Fully furnished. And more privacy. Plus it was right on the beach. And B: because we wanted to stay away from the crowded beaches. ... read more

Our March/April 2008 trip to our house in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Today Easter Sunday was a super day with wonderful weather. After brunch this morning at Guiseppi's on Fremont we went to the beach East of town near Manny's. There were a lot of gulls of course and a few pelicans. The tide was coming in quite fast in the course of an hour and a half we were there. Last Wednesday at Manny's my nephew Mark and I saw a whale spout twice. We're not sure why a whale would be here this time of year unless he/she made a wrong turn at Cabo San Lucas and should be out in the Pacific headed North. It possibly could have been a young one not knowing the rules. :-)... read more

Oh Mex-i-co! We were very excited about this trip to Rocky Point with a huge group of friends! Nick and I (along with Lucas and Amy obviously) were on the road by 8.30am. It took us 3-4 hours to make it south of the border, were we were waived into Mexico without even a glance at our passports!! A real contrast to the high tec American border control just meters away. As soon as you drive over the border you notice the difference, obviously not a lot of money there! The most amusing thing was undoubtably the road signs in Mexico on the way to rocky point. There was sign after sign warning you to watch out for different animals. After a while we were wondering if it was a joke of some sort - really ... read more
