Day 19
24/05/2019
Edmonton – Occidential at Xcaret Mexico
Wow a short night sleep and the alarm went off at 4.30 am so that we could finish packing our case and hand luggage to be out the door just after 5. Rob very kindly said that he would drive Scott, Karly, Ron and me to the airport. Once we checked in we boarded the first flight to Calgary and then after a quick change of flight we boarded the 5 hour flight to Cancun. I took the opportunity to snooze on the plane and then we arrived. I must say that the Cancun airport is very modern, extremely clean and quite easy to navigate through. Once through customs and immigration we headed outside and bang! The heat and humidity hit us with a vengeance. We found our transfer and once on board he had the air conditioner going and it was far more pleasant. We had about a 45 minute drive south from Cancun to an area called Playa del Carmen where the resort was located. The security at the entrance was strong as the shuttle bus needed to go through two sets of security gates before reaching the resort.
The entrance of the foyer was a huge round thatched roof that looked like a gigantic gazeebo. After a quick check in we were shown to or room and we were very impressed with the standard and the first impression of the resort. It will be a great week here. By the time we arrived in the room it was after 6 pm so we decided that we would have a quick walk around the resort to become a little familiar with it! Hahaha as it is set in the middle of a jungle and all of the paths look the same. A couple on the transfer bus had stayed at the same resort previously and suggested that we have breakfast at the beach buffet so we made sure that we knew where it was for the morning. We headed back to the main buffet to have dinner. Tonight the dinner was seafood so Ron and Scott were in their element. Karly and I not so much but we did find some delicious food there to have. First drinks were Pina Coladas. Wow they tasted so good. This could be my downfall for the next 6 days. We found the
Pizza and Mexican late night area that is open till early hours of the morning so we decided that we would try the pizza and tacos. We had a few more drinks and then the floorshow started so we decided to go down and watch it. It was an International floorshow showcasing different countries. They did a really good job of entertaining the crowd as everyone seemed to enjoy it. In the open area where the floorshow is performed it is in a court yard where they had small stalls selling artefacts and souvenirs. We had a browse and then decided that we were tired as it had been a long day. Thank heavens for the air-conditioning in the rooms as it was still around 26C and extremely humid.
