It started out a little rainy, but here in Cozumel rain showers usually pass quickly, and are followed by sun and clouds. Ian convinces our neighbors Ken & Mary to rent a scooter, so after the roads dry up a bit we head out to Paradise Beach about 10 km south. If your interested, I've posted many pictures of this beach area in some of my previous blogs.
It stays fairly cloudy which is actually nice since it's a bit cooler, about 24 C. We are pleased to find only a handful of people at the beach today. Last time Ian and I were there it was so packed we could barely find a place to sit down. Our friends convince me to try snorkeling with them along the pier. I've been trying to work up some courage as I hate getting my face wet (like my Mom,) salt water in my eyes is also not very pleasant. I hope I have my mask properly adjusted this time. I'm obviously very nervous. Ken and Mary are a huge help and very patient while I struggle to get into the ocean and get my snorkel and mask organized. After my inital
panick attack, I settle down into breathing through the snorkel. Ken urges me to put my face a little further in the water and I'm actually starting to get the hang of it, no leaks in my mask this time, no salt water coming in from my snorkel - yay! The water is merky, likely stirred up from the recent rain, but I see the most amazing schools of little fish - they are everywhere, thousands and thousands of them all around me like a fish bowl. I see a few larger fish as well and some coral on the sea bed. Not wanting to wreck a good thing, I bail out after about 20 minutes. Next time I would like to get some ear plugs to keep the water out of my ears. I am eager to try snorkeling again in clearer water.
I've never really understood why Paradise Beach has a pool, we have a pool at our condo so we go there to use the beach, but today we learn that the pool is heated. We all go for a nice long relaxing swim. The water is about 90 F, very pleasant and relaxing. A good
way to rinse the salt from the ocean off our skin.
It spits a little rain on us on the scooter ride back to the condo but nothing serious and we all make it back without incident. Scooters are really a very fun way to get around Cozumel, but you do need to drive carefully.
After dinner we head across the street to listen to a band. There's a little beach bar next to La Hache which looks a lot better in the evening than during the day. It has a nice ambience with soft lighting and palm trees, the stage is set up so the ocean is the back drop for the band. The service is very good, a waiter attends to our every need and even wipes the table if condensation builds up under our glass. It's a beautiful warm evening under the stars, we're hanging out with new friends and listening to some awesome live music. The band is 11 pieces, three horns, three drummers, keyboard, base, base guitar and two singers. They are very talented, the music is very enjoyable, it reminds me a lot of Cuba. I head back to the condo fairly early, while Ian stays out a bit longer. We couldn't even ask for a better day... or night!
