Chetumal, 24 abril 1990. We left Belize-City on the 10 o'clock bus for Chetumal this morning arriving in Mexico at 14.00 h. afternoon. We plan to get on the overnight bus to Cancun at 23.35 h. so we'll save on a hotel room. Since James is still seething with sheer anger at what he considers Peter's "betrayal", it seemed a good idea to leave him alone with our backpacks in Chetumal's main zocalo while Nora and me went on a little city tour by foot. We walk on Chetumal's wide boulevards holding hands and enjoying the feeling of young people being in love, stopping often to embrace with Nora whispering words of love in my ears in her native Louisiana accented french, drinking cafe con leche at one of the numereous bars that line these busy ... read more

Chetumal, 19-01-1990. Deciding to leave the public transpotation system of the mexican transport world alone, we left Coba by foot and once we got to the highway - well it looked like a highway but with hardly any cars on it - we just put our thump out in the universal way of asking in sign language for a free ride. Despite the almost absolute absence of cars, we got a ride in no time from an american woman to Tulum. Tulum has got it own set of Mayan ruins and turned out to be a good place for lunch before setting out on this so-called highway that has no cars on it, for Chetumal. Somehow we were lucky again and got a lift almost instantly for Chetumal from a mexican who 0ffered us a shit ... read more

Chetumal. 21-01-1990. Giving in to James' constant moaning about how much he needs to get laid, we went to a Casa Nocturna - the mexican word for whorehouse - together with our new found "friends" from Belize. I have a strong suspicion they are slowly getting pissed of with us, i mean we keep drinking their cervezas and smoking thier cigarettes while pushing these so called business conversations to another day. We might do wise to leave Chetumal sooner rather than later!!! The casa nocturna was way out of town and what i think about the prices for the senoritas is probably better not said or written down here. Late at night and semi drunk we left our black "amigos" behind with some stupid excuse and hitched back to Chetumal with a bunch of drunk locals ... read more

Chetumal, 20-01-1990. My hunch about these belizians staying en masse at our hotel, could very well be true. According to some mexicans we met in a bar last night most of these belizians just come across the border for all sorts of shady businesses quickly crossing back into Belize before getting themselves into all sorts of problems with the mexican police. needless to say that soon enough after we checked in, they came over to our room to check us out - any money to make from these two rednecks from Europe? Well, they couldn't possibly know that me and James have been around, done real heavy drinking in real heavy bars in Amsterdam and bars the world over. These young black bucks - Belize's population is black african instead of latino - thought they could ... read more

Hola gente van het goede leven! Te veel te vertellen eigenlijk en is een tijdje geleden dat ik een bericht heb achtergelaten... Alles gaat heel lekker hier. ... read more

We were well prepared for Hurricane Dean, unlike many other tourists. As soon as we heard the news of the hurricane from Carlos' parents 4 days before it was going to hit we made our plans. We first bought plane tickets on-line flying out of Chetumal to Mexico City. At the time of when we bought the tickets the hurricane was suppose to hit further north, but that changed a couple of days before we arrived in Chetumal. Our tickets were for Monday the 20th at 1:00 p.m. so we gave ourselves 12 hours before the hurricane was suppose to hit...good timing on our part. We continued our trip in Playa del Carmen and continued on to Tulum as well. As soon as we arrived in Tulum we bought our bus tickets to Chetumal. We had ... read more

The rain poured, so we went to do something I actually found quite interesting. ‘Cenote’ cave exploring, this is a natural underground sink hole found in a nearby place called Dzitnup. This is where the Mayans used to get their fresh water. These Cenotes’ have been created over MILLIONS of years by drops of rainwater that slowly dripped through the Yucatan’s granite earth creating these beautiful hanging stalactites. I slithered into the clear warm water and swam alongside hundreds of small black fish, I was on guard in case the big black pond monster lurking in the deeper abyss parts decided to show itself, my fear of water ever present, saying this it felt very satisfying being in there. The sun burst through the caves upper hole for about six minutes, but the light soon passed ... read more

Leaving Tuxatepec I was feeling sad, not wanting to be the only gringa in a place. Also the bus station was absolutely crazy with travellers - had thought of not staying the one night when I arrived but buses were sold out- when I awoke I was thinking of going to the Tuxlas - a low hilly region in the south of Veracruz state on my way back to the yucutan pennisula - but somehow changed my mind and in a panic bought a bus ticket to veracruz city - most popular destination. The bus trip on second class bus on secondary highway was good, but 3 hours - longer than i thought - was hungry and the roadside stands became full of pineapples (my favorite fruit) and coconuts and watermelon. Got to veracruz - was ... read more
