Also Obacht. Ich wusste, dass Cancún sehr touristisch ist und dass ge... read more

The first great experience of this three-month journey occurred the day before the journey itself. I saw a message on my phone as I ate my weetbix and honey confirming that our Melbourne to LA flight had been upgraded to business class. This was to be my first experience of such luxury and I lapped it all up. Leanne had only ever done this once before when flying to the USA for work so it was special for her too. If you haven’t had the experience before, let me tell you about it. The first thing I noticed was the space between my seat and the next. Not just leg room; no one’s legs could reach the seat in front of them. You can really spread out and you have an overhead compartment all to yourself. ... read more

As usual, I like to wrap up my trips with a run down of my favorite places, foods, people, etc. I'll also talk about my trip back home, since I didn't spend any time doing that in the immediate aftermath of the trip. It's been a few weeks since I went on the trip, so I feel it's a good time to reflect. My taxi for the airport in Cancun was a repeat performance by my favorite cabbie - the one who had taken me to the El Rey ruins on my first day in town. I was as surprised to see her and she was to see me. But there was another guy in the cab, in the front seat. And as usual, she was on the phone for most of the trip to the ... read more

Today was a weird day. I took my first domestic Mexican flight from Villahermosa to Cancun. It was very efficient, but no frills. I was fine with that. I only paid $40 for the flight, but it included a checked bag (which is something unheard of in the USA for domestic, or for budget airlines in Europe) and apparently premium seating. They had me in the exit row across the wing, but it had more leg room, so I was fine with that. It was a smooth flight that landed about 30 minutes ahead of schedule. The airport at Villahermosa was small, but it had all the things you'd expect: friendly ticket counters, a few fast food places, the usual convenience stores, and even a boutique once you get through security. And security was so efficient. ... read more

Left Chichen Itza Noon time heading to what we thought to be a 3 drive on a sunny day to Cancun. Of Coarse we always go the scenic way and get a little lost, but we see more that way. Bonus great roads. 1st toll 143 pesos. Second toll 526 pesos. OOCH! to go only about 40 Kms into Cancun. Arriving a little later than planned and forgetting about another time change losing an hour we hit the friday rush and had to go clear through downtown to the RV Park that we had chosen for its location to every thing. But Moco Loco was having an event and they were full. So around we went through to the south in all that traffic again To Cancun RV Park of the south end. Far from the ... read more

Up early, of course, on our last day in Cancun to go get breakfast before heading to the airport. The buffet had an amazing looking crepe station, but I was so afraid of what that would do to my stomach I passed it up. Shucks! We grabbed our bags from our room and went to the front desk to check out. A quick taxi ride and we were at the airport. I was so early getting us there, the Spirit desk wasn't even open yet - woops! Oh well, 30 minutes later we were in line, getting checked in. I am so excited we learned about the military discount for baggage - they didn't even care it was a little overweight. After a very short TSA line, we were in the gate area which was filled ... read more

I awoke our last full day in Cancun miserable. My stomach and intestines were sore and then some. I was wiped of energy and I think sporting a fever. I tried to relax that morning and prep for my Northrup Grumman interview between bathroom breaks. Lauren had told me about an app called Talkatone that allows you to call US numbers free through the internet. I downloaded it and called the one person I was sure to be home and free at this time of day, my dad. Unfortunately the call to the house phone didn't work but to his cell phone did. He tried to help me use Skype to get to the landline but I couldn't figure it out. I tried the number they provided for Northrup Grumman and luckily it worked with Talkatone. ... read more

Both Alex and I had a rough night of sleep, though I am not sure why. As a result we were up and packed ready to move over to the Dream Sands Resort & Spa by 9:15. Andrea had sent me a message saying she would be out so to lock the gate then throw the keys in close to the door. Alex took care of the throw part landing the keys right next to the front door. We snagged a cab who drove us first to the wrong hotel and we had to make our way back to the right one. Later while writing this post, the other hotel's name popped up to review..so many they changed names?? At the hotel they took our big bags and signed us in. However, they mentioned that there ... read more

Another early morning, yey! I woke up dreaming of hockey and realized I hadn't booked a distillery tour for this upcoming weekend so I sent Alex to the bathroom whi!e I did that. Then I headed in to get ready. 2 seconds later Alex was telling through the door that we were running late and needed to leave ASAP. So a quick rush through my routine and off we went. I snagged our bag of pastries from the kitchen on the way out. It was chilly! The rain from the day before ble away the humidity and left a breeze. I was wishing for my jacket by the time we made it to the hotel for pick up. Once we got there, I pulled out a pastry while waiting for the Go Mexico bus ( we ... read more

The wind didn't die down yet. Our door moved all night long thanks to the wind. Oh well, we still slept pretty well. Took our time this morning. We took our exploration out of Downtown Cancun and over to the Hotel Zone. We jumped in a cab to shuttle us down to the museum. We are getting much better at negotiating price with them. Across the street was a restaurant, so we went over for lunch. However, because it is Sunday they had a breakfast buffet going until 2pm. So that was our only option. Turned out to be a good idea, we had a lot of fun trying out all the food including multiple deserts and juices. Had a nice view too. We walked back across the street to the Museo Mayan de Cancun.
