After Campeche, it was time for some more serious driving back to the east coast again, about 5 1/2 hrs in total. On the road we experienced our first rain so far - not so bad, given that it's supposed to be the rainy season now! The rain stopped just in time for us to pause our journey at the Becan ruins. Much less visited that the Tulums and Chitchen Itzas in the world, we pretty much had the place to ourselves, and we could climb the temples freely. When I was slightly hesitant about climbing one of the (still somewhat wet) temples in my sandals, Steve declared very encouragingly 'you'll be fine, these steps are no steeper than the stairs at your parents place!' So mom, dad, thanks for raising me in such an adventurous ... read more

I set up camp on the shore of Lago Bacalar after a long drive from Palenque. It wasn't a particularly difficult drive in spite of two army checkpoints and a state police checkpoint. The roads were good and the cops didn't want to deal with my horrific Spanish. There as tame as pussy cats after their ears start to bleed. This is a undeniably a beautiful place. Bacalar is a freshwater lake that is everywhere a perfect shade of turquoise. The Maya believe that a most magnificent automobile known as the Mighty Colt inspired the gods to make it so. My camping spot is unbelievable in the sense that it's just not quite right. I belong here, I'm afraid. It's really a balanerio (swimming place) that accommodates campers and anyone else who will pony up $6 ... read more

We arrived at Chetumal in the wee small hours of the morning and shared a taxi into the town centre with a French girl who was travelling on her own. She had not booked anything and didn’t have any idea where to go, in my opinion she was pretty lucky we were there as no-one else got off the bus and the place was deserted, I must be getting old and sensible . We ended up at a very cheap hotel which had no air con and was a real sweat box to us air conditioned snobs!!! Needless to say, we moved out very early the next morning to a hotel over the road (Hotel Ghandi (400MXN) air con etc). Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo state and our reason for stopping here was to ... read more

April 14, Tuesday Taxes are done and I'm a happy camper. Actually I'm a happy hotel-er since we've only camped once in Mexico so far. I have to keep in mind that the rooms are between 250 pesos and 750 pesos - or between $20 and $60 per night. Not really that bad considering the cost of camping in a lot of State Parks is about $8 to get in and another $20 to $30 to camp. We left Palanque and headed north and east to Escarcega, in Tabasco State. I'm not sure if that's where the spicey sauce got it's name from. When we visited Avery Island LA, home of the Tabasco brand, they mentioned that the originator brought home some peppers from somewhere, so maybe it was from the state of Tabasco in Mexico ... read more

Today we left Cancun for Bacalar. On the way we stopped at Tulum, the site of a post-classic Mayan/Toltec walled city. It's the only ruins situated next to a beach and it was beautiful. It's incredible to be swimming in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean only to look up and see ancient ruins a few metres away! Afterwards we drove to Bacalar where our hotel was located on a freshwater lagoon called Laguna de Siete Colores. Hurricane Dean swept through this area and you can see the devastation on many wooden structures and trees. Our hotel is outdated and overpriceded (US$10 for spagetti in a can!) but there's not much we can do due to its isolation. Next stop Belize! ... read more

We packed up and caught a boat at 10am to Belize City to reboard our Tucan bus for the trip to Bacalar, Mexico. Crossing the border into Mexico was a bit more involved than usual. It cost $37.50 BZ ($17.25US) each to leave Belize and nothing to enter Mexico. We had to show our own passports, fill out declarations forms, and carry all our luggage across for the entry into Mexico. Our hotel, Hotel Laguna, was only 30 or 40 minutes from the border and just outside Bacalar, right on the lake. The hotel is really cool and should be rated higher than the 2 or 3 stars, but apparently lacks some of the upkeep requirements such as paint, etc. We got a nice room with a balcony overlooking the lake, nicely tiled bath, but ... read more

The Mayan Land Having travelled over half the country in one Giant leap (26 hour bus ride) from Mexico City. I find myself in the land of the Mayan. Even stepping off the bus in Cancun (hell hole) you can feel the underlying energy. This is one of the most highly saturated historic regions in the World, over 400 temples are spread between here and the Guatemala border, all have the distinct pyramid shape. All temples are immediately taken from the Design of Teotihuacán (Mexico city) To visit all of them is said to take over a year. Most are placed deep within intense jungle and take days of trekking to reach. Having spent already a large part of this trip visiting and photographing the most prominent of all the historical sites, you conclude that ... read more
