There are quite a lot of overweight Mexicans. no surprise really when thereare tasty deep fried snacks on every corner. Gorditas are a particular fave in the area. Literally meaning little fatties, they are maize pattie type things filled with your choice of cheese, potato, cactus leaf, beef, chicken and of course, chilli. On the road, you really appreciate a good, wholesome and cheap dinner and Queretaro really came up trumps. Mi Kza, just around the corner of the Red Giraffe hostel was 35 peso well spent (1.50) for a soup, a main meal with salad and veg, a pudding and a 2 litre jug of home made juice! It´s a quaint little city and famous for being the starting point for the revolution. They are proud of their heritage, even the rather risque story of ... read more

I arrived in Queretaro around 8:00 p.m. The hostel I stayed at was cool. The owner was a young dude that used to live in the States, so his English was really good, but we primarily spoke in Spanish. He showed me to my quarters where I met Christian (an Italian dude...he was cool). As me and Christian got to talking, he told me about this town he just visited where there was a huge rock he hiked to. The town is called Bernal. He showed me some photos and it looked really cool. He advised that I should visit the place. This is the cool thing about traveling freely (and its happened a few times), you meet someone and they tell you about a place they visited that you never heard of or ever considered. ... read more

Good Day/Morning/Evening All, **Right now they've turned the lights off in the mall and we are being asked to leave (I think) we have more videos and pictures they just take too long to down load**** Brad and I are at an internet cafe at a mall in Queretaro with some very loud spanish music playing. We ended up staying in a really rough place last night in a hotel bus stop. We were warned of a double murder up the road the night before so we stayed stealth. Employed all the standard Reynolds tricks. We left there and made our way South again with our little tourist glossy map. Brad is now typing. We have passed many a poor dead dog and puppies people have seemed to haphazardly thrown from their pick ups. I guess ... read more

After a couple days of touring around in San Miguel with our good friend Urian, we decided to take a day trip to a city full of history, restaurants and shopping: Santiago de Querétaro. The city holds the same name as the state, and it is the state capital. It was a town that neither Ronnie nor I have ever been to and Urian was happy to join us for some place new. We got a late start in the morning as we couldn't decide which town to go to for a day trip, so by the time we got to the bus station it was already noon. The station was very clean and a lot nicer than I expected. My only real long-drive bus stations I have experienced was the Greyhound station in San Francisco, ... read more

Yesterday was my first day of classes and I an really excited about this semester! My first class of the day is a class on Spanish Literature which I know is going to be a little bit of a struggle for me. The readings that we have to do in this class are really hard, but I know that I can do well. My second class of the day is the history of Latin America and the Caribbean. History really isn't my favorite subject, but our professor is really nice and is willing to help us with anything and answer any of our questions. As the days progress, I can feel my Spanish getting better which I am really excited about. The first couple of days in Mexico were a little difficult because it was hard ... read more

It has been almost a week since I have arrived here in Queretaro, and so far it has been an interesting experience. On our first full day here in the city we had orientation for the university that we are attending : Monterrey Tec. They talked about our classes, some cultural differences that we might notice, and some general safety tips. The city of Queretaro itself, not the state, has about one million inhabitants, and is about four times the size of Lincoln. My host family is great, and so is my roommate! My host parents are probably in their mid sixties, their names are Socorro and Javier and they are some of the nicest people that I have ever met. Our host mom cooks all of our meals, and has them ready for us whenever ... read more

We arrived in Queretaro around 11 am and were considering continuing to Jalpan but it was 5 hours away and I (Rae) was suffering a dose of diarrhoea so we decided to stay put. We took a prepaid taxi from the bus terminal to Posada Aqueducto which was lovely and colourful. We got a king-size bed and a balcony for P$320 (US$30) a night. The lady at the hotel was all smiles and spoke slowly for us. The laundry guy down the road was equally friendly and helpful. And the tourist info guy was great. The whole town was full of warm people and we felt very relaxed there. After a cappuccino on the Plaza de Armas we visited the Casa de la Zacatecana where there were some lovely old ladies pointing the way around the ... read more
