Oaxaca was an interesting place for me, I couchsurfed for the first time in mexico. And couldnt have got it any better. My host was a spanish teacher and taught me some basics in return I gave him some lessons in german. We spent a lot of time walking the streets of Oaxaca, making contact with some stencil artist having an exhibition in the middle of town. We visited their atelier at the old train station where a circus of probably american acrobats were rehearsing their show. A battered old school bus was their home and backdrop to a couple performing arial accrobacy while dressed up old men tried to lure some more people to their show. "Ah you are not here to stay for the theatre, dont worry it most likely will be shit anyway..." ... read more

The morning dawned, as so often happens after the evening, and we packed our stuff, used our last breakfast tickets at the disappointing hotel restaurant, and made our way to the metro station. Last stop – Tapo, the name of the bus station servicing the south. Finding the stop posed no particular challenge, located as it was on the train line. Finding the massive bus station proved more difficult, perhaps more difficult than it should have been. It required a few random flights of stairs, strange doors and guesswork, the experience enhanced by the fact there was now four people involved in said guesswork. By the time the we found it the buses were full – only to be expected in the week before Christmas. The bus terminal itself was very flash, a large circle with ... read more

- bob - A Day Trip to Mitla I thought I would give you an idea of one of our activities. The last time we were here we didn't get to the ruins at Mitla. Yesterday we went to see them. We took an hour journey on the second class bus to get there followed by a short tricycle cab ride. Browsed a minimal museum and wandered through the reconstructed ruins. This was not a Monte Alban, Palenque or Teotihuacan. Just some piles of stones, rocks, modern recreations and a few very old atifacts. Turns out most of the construction material was taken by the spaniards to build a church in the 16h century. We found this to be true in Europe on our travels also. It was much easier to tear down the Roman constructions ... read more

So, it's the 19th of November and Cris and I finally made to the airport in Tijuana. We were not shot at or kidnapped by criminals. As a matter of fact we managed to stop and eat a few tacos safely, but unfortunately my request for whole wheat tortillas fell silent. The airport is small and very easy to navigate. There were two departure gates in the terminal and both led to the same sidewalk which followed 10 ft of grass and then the tarmac. We took the steps down from the Volaris aircraft, which I must say was a very pleasant and comfortable flight (hopefully Volaris gives me a discount for my entry), and we made our way from the tarmac—to the sidewalk—to one of the two terminals—and finally the baggage claim (all in 10 ... read more

- Sue - Oaxaca is a great city in which to experience El Dia de los Muertos (the day of the dead). This celebration actually spans several days with highlights (at least this year) on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The idea behind the festival is that the dead return overnight to commune with their living relatives and loved ones. It is generally party time. People decorate the graves with flowers (mostly marigolds), food, drink and candles. Then they sit around the graves all night and either party or contemplate. What a concept! The city seems to go all out with processions for the children and their parents, sand sculptures in the Zocalo, an artist competition of sorts for painting/decorating huge skulls maybe made of paper mache, and cemetery decorations. The sand sculptures and skulls seem ... read more

- Sue - For you cooks out there: Finding food here is a chore that must be done every couple of days. It's been hard finding even the simplest of spices and herbs. I'm sure that when you live here for a while, you find the right shops and just keep going back for more. But finding the right shops isn't easy. On the up side, every day brings a new challenge. In addition to salt and pepper, I now have a head of garlic as well as a small jar of dried chicken broth and a small bottle of mustard I can use for flavoring. I also bought a small quantity of dried oregano from a produce market. I found it to be mostly stems with a few leaves attached. Oh well, better than nothing. ... read more

We arrived in Oaxaca early on the 1st of November. Even in Chiapas we had seen posters advertising Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, it was supposed to be a massive event. It had been so busy that we were unable to find any hostels with online availabilty before we left San Cristobal. Fortunately our Swedish friend Daniel had checked into a hostel the previous day, and had been able to make a reservation for us too. We would be staying at Casa de Don Pablo, and it turned out to be a really great place. Upon arriving in Oaxaca we were surprised. From what we had read on the city we thought we were headed somewhere even more quaint than San Cristobal- we had expected to be stepping back in time to see ladies dying ... read more
