Well, it's me again with more photos and adventures. I went to the Zocalo (main plaza) on Sunday. I ate ice cream at Michoacana heladeria and walked around and looked and listened to the youth band. They were playing in honor of the 480th anniversary of the city of Oaxaca. They were very good. After the Zocalo I went to the Veinte de Noviembre Marcado (the November 20th Market). I did not take many photos there. For some reason the vendors will tell you "no" when you ask to take their pictures and we have to respect their wishes. Today (wed.) in Llano park there was a parade to celebrate the aniversario. It would have been great to have my camera to take a video. I have decided to take my camera with me everywhere. Hi All, I went to Hiervas Aguas and the Metzcal Factory the past weekend and my camera ran out of energy as I began to take photos. Luckily two of the other students had their cameras with them and sent me photos today by e-mail today so I am going to get started blogging again. I did not get an opportunity to go on an excursion on Sunday because not enough people signed up but I did get an opportunity to go to the Zocalo and to the market and I took photos there. In the last photo here the other students thought it would be great fun to get a picture of me tasting the metzcal hence the title, Donzetta, la borracha (drunk). Enjoy!... read more

Last weekend I went to the Mercado de Xochomilco which is held in the courtyard of The Iglesia de San Tomas (St. Thomas Church) where I visited with several persons from Los Estados Unidos (USA) and brought organic vegetables. I was there from about 10 am to 2 pm. It was the first time that I had met African Americans in Oaxaca, one lady is an author who has lived there for 25 years and another gentleman is from Seattle who, with his wife, travels 9 months out of the year and goes back home for 3 month...very interesting! I met another family from the USA and one lady from there, who did not want her picture included, but visited with me for a long time. All in all, it was a very pleasant and unexpected ... read more

Hello All, I think I am now back up to speed. I have a small backlog of photos which I will share over the next few days. And I will have more photo over the weekend as I have signed up for some school excursions to some of the surrounding pueblos. I am hoping the text in the photos from my interviews will all show. I think that all of the people that I am meeting are pretty marvelous. I think that you will agree, so with their consent, I am sharing some of each of their stories with you.... read more

Hello All, I have been somewhat remiss in getting an entry in my blog. My camera finally "bit the dust" and I had to get the staff person here at school to set the new one up. I had to take a lot of ribbing from the staff about wanting the language in the camera changed from spanish to english but Ryota (from Japan) did it for me. I missed getting pictures the weekend before last because the camera was broken. We went to San Bartolo (black pottery), San Martin (alebrijes). San Martin was one of the places in Oaxaca that the president's daughter visited during the earthquake time. The owner told us that we were sitting on the same bench as she sat on when she visited there. He said she was very tall, very ... read more

Hi All, Today is the conclusion of Semana Santa (Holy Week). It began on El Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) and ended with Pascua (Easter). The highlights were Jueves Santa (Holy Thursday) and Viernes Santa (Good Friday). I went to Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday masses. I did not get to participate in Holy Thursday where they visit seven churches because I was in class. I did get to walk in the "Procesion de Silencio (The Procession in Silence which began at 1800. On fridays I get out of class at 1300 so I got a chance to go home and rest and then go to the church to make the walk. The visualizer on my camera is broken but I attempted to take pictures and videos and to my surprise they came out. I have ... read more

March 1999 and a few languidly pleasant days were spent absorbing the unique ambience of San Cristobal de las Casas, deep in the south of Mexico. The amalgam of the ubiquitous Spanish colonial architecture and indigenous Mayans wandering amongst made this town a standard stopover enroute to or from Guatemala. In the interim, European chic came to town and decided to stay. The resultant love child may be mourned by some who bemoan the myriad of trendy bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques now operating behind the colonial facades, but not us, we thrived on it. The sight of gritty indigenous street venders cohorting tourists directly in front of some of these edgy establishments is a sight for jaded tourist eyes. VIVA la Juxtaposition! This week the town was packed with visitors, mostly Mexican but also a ... read more

Hello All, I am reflecting on my good fortune in being here in this place now. I am first of all grateful to God for the resources to do this and then to my friends (especially Barb. and Jan) who have supported me in my return to good health and who (Barb) watch over those things of most importance to me while I am here. I am also grateful to TCC (Tulsa Community College) for their great progam in Spanish. It has given me the foundation to pursue greater fluency in the language. From receiving my Associate Degree of Arts in Spanish to completing my Certification for Medical Interpretation in Spanish, TCC has had a program in place all along the way. Upon returning to Tulsa after this trip) my plan is to take the National ... read more

As promised there are more photos of our excursion with En Via to the surrounding pueblos. I did get the name of the first pueblo. It is Tlacochahuaya...no wonder I couldn't remember it. Now I am being taught to say it. I'm not sure how long that will take. The pictures in this entry are of the pueblo of Teotitlan de Valle, a little bit easier to say and to remember. This pueblo is famous for its weaving of tapetes (rugs), bags and otras cosas. Many of the merchants use natural dyes, like the red from the cochineal bug that grows on cactus, which was a source of fortune for the spanish when they first came to New Spain (Mexico) and particularly to Oaxaxa. Una muy buena historia. One very interesting fact to know is that ... read more
