Well, we made it across the border with ease. got the green light everytime. Driving was not so bad, nice hwy for next to the border. By 5 pm, we were arriving in the outskirts of Monterrey. Driving into this city was hellish. I cut someone off, and they slowed to let me know. The lanes were decieving, I was doing the best I could! What a mess! We got to our hostel in one piece. El hostel aqui esta muy tranquil! Went out to a club, visited the historia de mexico museo, and fed the hungry on sunday. Grilled cheese sanwiches, juice, and bananas. I am dealing with some poison ivy that showed up a day after I left the woods in Arkansas, the mexico heat does not help, although, I am looking forward to ... read more

So I finally arrived in Monterrey after getting zero sleep the night before, but thats what I get for leaving all my packing and prep for the last minute! The rush of finally arriving to Mexico by far exceeded my sleepless night and I felt a high like no other- no place to sleep, I stick out like a sore thumb as not many tourists pass through this city that is only a 1 hour flight from Houston. Everywhere I go the music stops and people stare at the half gringo/half latin dude walking around the city- but hey thats part of the experience. As soon as I arrived to Monterrey I knew I wouldnt stay long, the city is perhaps the most Americanized of all Mexican cities with Home Depots, Burger Kings and all ... read more

good lord. downi in mexico, and its been a strange couple days. well, not really strange. just different. yesterday we drove to brownsville TX and hung out there. nice little town on the border. we were worried about how to get all of our stuff in order like our car permit and toursit cards, but tthe guy at the brownsville tourist center straigtened us out good. so we drove across this morning into matamoros. we took out some pesos and started looking for the highway. then a guy from the mexican tourism board offered to jump in our car and show us, which was good because it was complicated. the only drag was he wanted 400 pesos for it. ($40) but we begrudgingly paid. the roads were a little wild at first but the main high ... read more

When Ester and I got to Palenque, we stayed at a place called El Panchán. When you first enter, there are a few open air restaurants covered in tents, with 4 different sleeping accomodations places around it in the jungle (cabins, dorms, hammocks, etc.). We each paid about $5 for our cabaña for the night, brought our stuff to our very rustic room, then went to get some dinner at the restaurant with two other travelers, Alex, a German woman (taking a 5 week vacation here in Mexico) and Julian, a French guy (on the last leg of his 2 month world tour). We had a lot of fun recounting travel stories and talking about experiences here in Mexico. After 10pm, a band started playing, sort Cuban, sort of reggae, real hippy. The next morning we ... read more

Well, it's just around midnight on a Sunday night, and I'm feeling strangely inspired to (try to) recreate the amazing blog post I lost yesterday afternoon. For any of you that have studied abroad or spent an extended period of time in another culture, I'm entering the... "uh oh, my time is soon coming to an end, what would happen if I stayed?" phase. Don't worry Mom and Dad, I'm coming home. It's just that Mexico is coming to a close (well, Mexico as a nation is not ceasing to exist, just that the end of my time here is drawing near), and I'm experiencing some new feelings about the place I've come to call not quite "home," but someplace familiar, comfortable and friendly. In an effort to portray some of the smaller, more everyday occurrences ... read more
