Friday, 27 January. Yesterday, we moved a few miles north to Playa Chacala mostly off the tourist map and unique for its quiet solitude. This tiny village is 19 miles north of Rincon de Guayabitos and has no RV parks. A local guy used to let RV’ers park under his palms on a lovely section of the beach. There were no services provided. He was a somewhat inattentive landlord coming by only occasionally to collect rent. Well, the big rigs abused his generosity and began digging holes in the sand to dump their black (sewage) tanks. Now, nobody is allowed to camp here. There are numerous full service campgrounds within easy driving distance of Playa Chacala where these inconsiderate jackasses could have checked into a campground and paid a one night fee and legitimately dumped their ... read more
As you can see a chain link fence separates the former parking area from the beach. It is now off limits to Mexican tent campers too not that they would want to pitch a tent and let their kids play over a cess pool.
Rudy told us to tell other RVers with small rigs that they could park in front of this restaurant.

Thursday, 26 January. We’ve spent the past four days in Rincon de Guayabitos’s Paraiso del Pescador trailer park. This small, immaculately clean, attractive park is constantly full of regulars who winter here every year. They are like a large family – everybody knows everybody. We only got a space because the folks who occupied our site had to return home for emergency reasons the day we pulled in. Almost all of the “residents” are Canadian. There are only a couple of other Americans. Everybody is friendly and made us welcome. Each evening at 5:00 we gather on the large patio area overlooking the beach where everybody places their chair in a circle, women on one side, men on the other and play In The Box, a dice game where players chip in one peso each (about ... read more

Okay, I may have landed in paradise. I had read about this RV spot is another post and I really wanted to check it out. Ray and Marsha were already here, so we knew things were crowded. We were able to get the last spot at Villas El Dorado. It is primarily bungalows, but they have 4 RV sites. There is a wrought iron gate over the entry, so large RV´s cannot make it in. We have a beautiful campsite. The hotel and property are gorgeous. We spend the afternoons sitting out on the patio right by the beach. The beaches are spotless. There are numerous vendors. I got up yesterday morning and went down to the beach to buy fish. I was able to buy fresh dorado. They cleaned and filleted the fish. I bought ... read more

School begins. This is exactly the adventure we imagined when we set out. Riding our bikes down some dusty streets, off to school in some foreign land, with kids they'd never met, speaking a foreign tongue. Ahhh, yes. Ellis began his Mexican school career at 18 de Marzo, the public primary school in San Pancho. Uniform required - navy pants, white collared shirt, black shoes. Ellis took to the uni in stride. Shocking for kid who wears a collared shirt only when he must to play golf at a course that requires one. His usual uniform back home - shorts (regardless of month or temperature,) tee-shirt, skate shoes, and a flat-brimmed baseball hat. To say he has extremely specific and casual tastes in clothes is a gross understatement. When viewing Ellis in uniform that frst day ... read more

We are back in the USA and loving every minute of it. First meal in Ajo was a feast of Chinese food. I'm sure not the best but it tasted mighty fine to us. We left LaPenita on March 21. There were 6 rigs including us. A few more then we had thought but with the recent violence in Mexico getting closer to our area, we all needed to stick together. We spent 2 nights just north of Mazatlan exploring a little town off the beaten track a bit. We then drove like hell to San Carlos and spent 2 nights there. We all decided that it was way too long a drive and we must remember for next year but remember the horse and the barn door story . . . . . . . ... read more

I can't believe how neglectful I have been with my blog. We are still in LaPenita, Mexico but the park is clearing out by the day. I bet 50% of the rigs have pulled out heading North. Some take days and some drive like Hell to get across the border. It is a little like the horse when you head back to the barn, there is no stopping them. We leave here next Sunday, March 21st. We had thought we would take a week or so to get across the border but we need to be gone from Mexico by the beginning of Passover. The Mexicans travel in droves on this holiday causing great chaos on the roads. We will be across the border into the US by about thursday of that week. The winter has ... read more

On Thursday we hopped a bus north to go to the market at La Penita, which is the commercial town that serves the town of Rincon de Guayabitos which is right next to it, connected by a walking bridge (yes, another swinging bridge). For those of you at work, Guayabitos is the place that Jason Liggett stayed when he went to Mexico around Christmas time. Anyway, the market was three to four times bigger than the one in Bucerias, with much more selection and many different items. Have a look at some of the fantastic pictures that Steve took at the market here. Once again, the colors, the sounds, and the smells almost overwhelm the senses. It took us a couple of hours to wander through this fascinating place. Then, tired and hot, we found a ... read more

Well, this is Thursday, Feb 18th, and we are having our second day of rain, so I will work on the blog some more and tell you what we did on Valentine's day. It was Sunday, so in the morning we went down to the Sunday market again. This time I was ready to do some bargaining. It was a nice hot sunny day, and we spent over an hour just walking and browsing. It really is a feast for the senses - sights, sounds, smells, tastes - and all good! Have a look at the pictures - they tell the story. ... read more

If you want to come to the Pacific coast of Mexico, and are looking for a really great beach, then Bucerias is the place for you! The beach stretches as far as you can see in either direction, and it really is as nice as it looks. The water is refreshingly cool, but not at all cold. The waves are enough to have fun playing in, but rarely too high for swimming. The vendors are not pushy, and often have things that you really want to look at, or to eat. There are ladies selling pies, guys pushing wheelbarrows full of assorted nuts and candies, and barbequed shrimp on a stick that can be had at a reasonable price with just a bit of bargaining. Young girls sell small purses and beads, and bigger girls sell ... read more

North America » Mexico » Nayarit » Sayulita February 11th 2010

We took another bus trip north to the surfing town of Sayulita. They have bigger waves here than in the protected southern part of the bay, and even host surfing competitions here in December and January. The town itself looks much like any other small Mexican town. But many of the people we saw looked more like 60's flower children and surfer types, complete with dreadlocks, bare feet and deep tans. The shops sell artsy stuff that is way above my price range, and the clothing stores stock name brand shorts and beach attire, also at a high price. In contrast, Huichol indians weave baskets and sell colorful beadwork in the square. We spent an enjoyable day there, watching the birds and the people play in the waves. The pelicans wait for each big wave to ... read more
