We are back in the USA and loving every minute of it. First meal in Ajo was a feast of Chinese food. I'm sure not the best but it tasted mighty fine to us.
We left LaPenita on March 21. There were 6 rigs including us. A few more then we had thought but with the recent violence in Mexico getting closer to our area, we all needed to stick together. We spent 2 nights just north of Mazatlan exploring a little town off the beaten track a bit. We then drove like hell to San Carlos and spent 2 nights there. We all decided that it was way too long a drive and we must remember for next year but remember the horse and the barn door story . . . . . . . . Crossed the border at Lukeville without any traffic or insident at all and made our way to Ajo, Az. 2 of our group went through the border at Nogales and headed to Tucson and the rest of us went to Yuma. Chuck left us in Ajo to go to Tuscon for a few days. We spent a few days in Yuma. Shopping, eating
etc All the stuff that is so different in Mexico. The weather was warm and so nice and dry compared to our tropical weather in LaPenita. Left Yuma and travelled to Palm Springs. Met up with 6 other LaPenita campers there and enjoyed thier company. Did Easter dinner together.
In PS, I put my left foot on my vacuum hose rolled down the 2 stairs into our entrance way but my right leg stayed up top in the bedroom. Not a pretty sight. Didn't know my calve could touch my butt and still be attached!! Once Larry got my leg unwound from the door jamb we quickly realized that the ankle might be sprained or broken. Off to emerg and it was fractured. Just the bone on the outside where that big lump is, clear as mud. Emerg put a splint on it and then 3 days later I had to go to an Ortho clinic for a cast. Lovely bright pink. For all you people doing Health care insurance surveys (which I'm always doing) we have RBC out of country insurance. We phoned them before we went to the hospital, they told us what hospital to go to.
When we got there they knew we were coming and all about our insurance. I had an xray, saw a doctor, got a splint and crutches and drugs!! and walked out. the insurance plan will pay they said. I phoned again when I had to go to the Ortho guy, would it be covered. Yes, no problem. The Ortho place did not take insurance so we were to pay and then get reimbursed later. We saw a Dr, he already had the xray, prescribed meds for pain and the laceration on the shin and put a cast on and we paid. $90USD, can you believe it!! I had a call the next day from RBC insurance asking how I was and saying that if there was anything else I needed to call them or just pay and get reimbursed. A wheelchair rental no problem. So far I have been 100% happy with RBC insurance.
I laid around PS for a few days before we headed to Tehachapi, Ca. My biggest problem with my cast and our 5th was all the stairs. Larry ended up buying me knee pads and that was how I got in and out of the
trailer and up and down to the bedroom. Not a pretty sight but effective.
We parked our trailer in Roger and Helga's yard in Tehachapi, slept over night and then James drove us to Bakersfield. We rented a car and drove to LA for the night before flying out the next day to Sarasota, Florida to meet up with Jim and Debbie. We had planned on taking the train down to LA from closer to Tehachapi except that me and stairs don't get along right now. I could not imagine trying to hop on to a train or shuttle bus etc. and we really wanted to go to Florida. We stayed at a great hotel (Crowne Plaza) right by LAX, bought through Hotwire for $57USD. Great price for what we got.
It was a long day getting to Florida but I had a wheelchair and everyone was very kind. Exhausted by the time we got here but now I can basically sit for a week with my leg up where it feels most comfortable.
We are in Boca Grande which is on the West coast right on the Inland water way. A lovely 2 bedroom condo over
looking the waterway. We have a car and have done some driving around. We finally rented a wheelchair and it lets me be a little independent in the condo. I am not supposed to weight bear but as you all know athletic prowess is not in my bag of tricks.
We will leave here on thursday and Larry and I will spend another 2 weeks driving to the Keys, and up the east side of Florida.
Fly back to LAX April 29th and then will head home sometime after that. We have rented our house again so actually we are homeless. As homeless as we could be with so many wonderful family and friends. Sounds like I might be hitting some of you up for a bed but not really. We have summer plans and we have the wretched apartment that we have half torn apart.
More again.
