A 2.5 Hour bus ride from Cuitzeo . A perfect day clear skies and lots of Sun.In the past we have been the reserve at El Rossario, the other side of the same Mountain on a cloudy cool day none of them came out. Today was great. at an elevation of over 12,000 feet you are very winded once you have made the climb and further the horses that take you the last few 1000 feet are seasoned to this climb but still tired once the have reached the top. Once reached the reserve only steps from where the horses let us off over 4 million butterflies (Monarchs) where there in cacoons, flying around for there last flight before death after breeding. Any one travelling through theses parts of the world this is a must see. ... read more

Michoacan is really appealing with its numerous fantastic places and the island is one of these. I reached this island by boat which is the only mean to the island of Janitzio. When I was on my way to this place, the boat was approached by some fine fishermen. I then asked to a local what kind of fish they were catching and he explained to me that these are very popular fishermen of the Patzcuaro lake and called the butterfly fishermen because the net they use to catch the fish is butterfly-shaped net and they use skillful technique to catch the "pescado blanco" which means white fish. The local person also told me that the fisherman is located to the back of the 50 pesos Mexican banknote which was a surprise to me. I could ... read more

This part of Mexico does not see many touris, especially around the active volcano Paricutin. I reached this fantastic "pueblito" called San Juan from Uruapan which is a nearby city in the Michoacan state. I arrived in the morning time and curiously not many campesinos were around considering the bustling little towns of certain areas here in Mexico and I expected to see more action. Once got off the bus I started to search for a local guide to accompany me to climb the volcano. After a bit of walk passing through a line of colonial buildings I spotted a local paerson and asked courtiously if he knew where I could find a local guide out here. Luckily I was not far away from there and he pointed me the way to follow to get to ... read more

Over the weekend of my dad's and my birthday, I traveled to a ranch called San Cayetano in Zitácuaro, Mexico, to observe the migration of billions of monarch butterflies. The trip was a birthday gift to my father. I was expecting that the ranch we went to would look more like a farm with cows, stables and fresh hay, which was a scene I remember from my trip to south Germany, but I was surprised of how different the ranch looked compared to my memory. When I arrived on the 28th of February 2015 with my parents and some friends that accompanied us, I found myself in a paradise soaked in sunshine, which had a humungous colorful garden, which was calm and filled with silence because a forest enclosed it. It was as if I were ... read more

Feb 12 Travelled to Cuitzeo a small tribal town on a lake. We are parked dry camping in a school on a dirt lot. Cows are herded through daily with men on donkeys. The locals are friendly and kind a small town you can walk in one hour return. Valentines was very special as we were taken to this very rustic natural springs bath and then given a massage. We walked back to the hills passing by the locals with lots of conversation in Spanish they speak no English. When we pulled in winding down the narrow streets with everyone in town at the road side curious as if the circus was coming to town. They were moving cars so we could juggle down and lifting the power lines with sticks for us to get under. ... read more
