Na een vlucht van 3 uur zitten we al in Mexico stad. Geen tropische omgeving meer, dat is direct duidelijk. In het centrum alleen al wonen praktisch evenveel mensen als in België, in de ganse stad het dubbele. De eerste twee dagen rijden we rond in een 'Turibus' om een idee te krijgen van de omvang van de stad.

Opvallend weinig andere blanke toeristen. Mexico heeft een kwalijke reputatie. En wij durven hier zo maar rondreizen? We voelen ons op geen enkel ogenblik onveilig, zelfs s ‘avonds laat niet wanneer we te voet terug wandelen naar ons hotel.

Zo veel moois te zien in de stad. Je kan hier gemakkelijk een maand blijven als je echt alles wil ontdekken. Wij kiezen er een aantal bezienswaardigheden uit: Bellas Artes, el Castillo, Casa Azul - het huis van de beroemde schilderes Frida Kahlo en haar man Diego Rivera, el Palacio Nacional, ...

Verder stellen we vast dat de levensstandaard hier wat hoger ligt dan de vorige reeks landen die we bezochten. We doen ons hier al direct te goed aan super lekker eten met bijhorende wijn. Onze Bourgondische natuur komt weer naar boven. Een heel grote stad op meer dan 2.000m hoogte, we zouden er niet willen wonen maar zeker aan aanrader om te bezoeken!

It takes only 3 hours to fly from San Jose to Mexico City. As we arrive we sense immediately we left the tropical environment of Costa Rica behind. In the city center live almost as many people as in Belgium, in the entire city twice as much. For two days we let the ‘Turibus’ drive us around, the best way to get an impression of such a big city.

We are surprised by the low number of foreign tourists. Mexico has a reputation you know. We don’t mind, we never feel unsafe here, even at night when we walk back to our hotel.

There’s plenty of things to see and to do in the city. If we would spend a month we still wouldn’t get bored. We visit as much as possible: Bellas Artes, el Castillo, Casa Azul – the house of the famous painter Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera, el Palacio Nacional, ...



The standard of living seems to be higher compared to the countries we crossed before. We rise to the occasion and visit a fancy restaurant with great food and ditto wine. One of the biggest cities in the world at an altitude above 2000m, fascinating to visit.
