And so we are off on another worldly adventure. On May 16 we sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge signaling the end of our 2008 world cruising. Six months later on November 16 we drove over the Golden Gate Bridge on our way to Los Angeles to begin our next round of cruising. We certainly enjoyed our time on terra firma and made several trips in the United States. We visited family and friends in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Arizona, Nevada and California. When we were in Sausalito we enjoyed numerous boating trips around San Francisco Bay. It was nice to reconnect with our friends both in our marina and at our swim club. We were kept busy attending to our yearly medical appointments, tax reports, visa applications, boat maintenance and all the other day ... read more

Thursday, March 27, 2008 Acapulco Adventure Category: Travel and Places This is a few months back when I wrote this along with some of my entries, please keep in mind the location, and date. *********************************************************************************** Typing this back in San Diego after my trip to Acapulco, Mexico. Anyway, so I completely thought we were leaving Thursday morning to Acapulco when in fact it was Wednesday night. I had just went to a model fitting in Del Mar at a designers house, was on my way back to my place to go out with my girlfriends before leaving when my friend Carlos called me telling me he was on his way to come pick us up. Completely baffled, I flew home whilst my gas tank told me E! I completely did not pay attention to the flight ... read more

Geo: 16.978, -100.212The alarm went off before 5 this morning so that I could go to the laundry room before the crowds got there. I wasn't the first but there were two empty machines. The machines weren't very good and so it was finished around 7:30. While I was at the laundry room I read and Nikki did get up and join me after a while. We arrived in Acapulco sometime around 6:00 am. It had rained all night long and was still raining. After finishing the laundry, we went back to the room. Nikki got in bed and I went out on the verandah to read some more and people watch all the folk getting off the ship.We got the girls up around 8:30 and got ready to go into Acapulco. We were planning on visiting ... read more

If Cuernevaca is the city of the Eternal Spring, and as many down here claim "the most beautiful and most forgotten city in all of Mexico", they must never have been to Acapulco. After a week of intense (and I say that with no exaggeration whatsoever) spanish classes, we all could use a break. Although the appeal of the sand and the sun would later turn out not as relaxing as expected, our itinerary had us headed to Acapulco, Mexico for the weekend. After a day of daunting and what seemed like never ending classes, we all got ready to get on the bus at 2:45. Unfortunatley Mexicans really have no concept of time. The buses showed up somewhere around 3 and after loading all the luggage, getting everyone settled and signed in, we probably left ... read more

Along with a couple of people from Angela's Hostel we took the bus to Acapulco which was a 5 hour ride. We proved that we are hardcore backpackers by walking to the bus station in the heat of the midday sun. On hindsight this was probably not the best idea as it was really hot and by the end of it Kiki's face was red like a tomato for about an hour. Luckily it was not a sunburn but a case of over heating. In fact it was so hot that the glue which held Monia's trekking shoes together started melting and they began to come apart. The journey itself felt pretty long, but we were amused by the crazy bus driver who seemed to be concentrating on everything but the road ahead. He was smoking, ... read more

Acapulco...town of chickens on the beach! I have to admit its not my favorite place. By a long shot! Its extremely humid for one! But more importantly its dirty, its ugly, its polluted and there is FAR too much traffic! Even the old town doesnt have that much charm...the zocalo is reasonable but the markets are horrible, its bad enough being harssed to buy something at every step but having it done in English really irritates me! If I were a rich cruise ship passenger and stopped off there, or Id flown all the way from Europe for the holiday of a lifetime I would NOT be impressed! Still its not that bad! We hit the town in the low season so it was quite quiet and because its not that glitzy its pretty cheap! We ... read more

We were well-situated to watch the eclipse on the 20th. It was wonderful to see it from Acapulco! We spent our last full day in Acapulco exploring the "new" part of the city and some of the oldest. We walked part of the main Acapulco beach, where the high rise hotels are, and Spring Break happens. The beaches were crowded in spots and open in others. There were para-sailing outfits all along the beach. We next visted the old zocalo (or town square), church, and fort, passing by the cruise ship dock. I made one last call, still trying to locate my missing bag, but no luck. Next we went up to the cliffs where the famous divers put on their show. The road itself was pretty: steep cliffs dropping to a rocky coast with waves ... read more

Well, we corrected our mistake, and took a bus back to Acapulco yesterday. We are staying at a "beach resort" in the faded grandeur of old Acapulco...we are right on a little beach, in a hotel that has seen better days, but is clean and has a pool, beach chairs (although the Italian Canadians who are here en masse snag most of them at sunrise) and a beautiful view. We are among the youngest people here.....and the least tan...and I mean tan as in leather.... We walked up the hills above the hotel this morning and saw some abandoned properties and some beautiful homes, along with nice family hotels. The salt water is clean, it appears, and everyone is friendly and helpful... We loved Taxco, but the traffic was unbearable, especially since there are no sidewalks ... read more

MEXICO Puerto Chiapas is at the southern-most point of Mexico and is the gateway to Guatemala. It is an area rich in history, political turmoil and a big coffee growing region. The port has been recently renovated and has a large thatched-roof pyramid to reflect the Mayan heritage of the area along with a restaurant and swimming pool exclusively for cruise passenger usage. We were greeted at the pier with music and dancers in native costume. Izapa is a 30 minute drive from the port and is the site of ancient ruins. It is believed to be where the sacred Mayan Calendar originated. There is also an interesting mangrove jungle tour by boat. Bahia de Huatulco is always one of our favorite stops. There are nine small bays all of which are ecologically protected from mass ... read more

We anchored in the Acapulco harbour early in the morning on the third day of the cruise. We only had a few hours there so to maximize our time we decided to take “ The City Tour plus the Cliff Divers” , ( an organized tour for $58.00 each , for 4 hours in “air-con” motor coach ….. and thank goodness for that …. it was about 90 degrees and SUNNY). Most of Acapulco is just another little Mexican city, (… mind you, there are MANY new condo developments on the go on every hillside) … but the setting is spectacular, with high blue mountains in the distance and the blue and turquoise water of the ocean. After touring the city, checking the harbor and “photo spots, we went to the El Mirador Hotel with its ... read more
